Best VFX Studios in New York (2026)

12 studios handling visual effects in New York for advertising, film and episodic work after the Technicolor collapse

Introduction

New York has a large and varied visual effects scene, serving advertising agencies on one side and film and episodic productions on the other. The 12 studios below were chosen for recent credits, 2025 and 2026 recognition, and a working presence in New York.

The last two years reshaped the field. Technicolor Group entered administration in February 2025, a week after announcing it would close its US offices, which took The Mill and MPC out of the city. TransPerfect bought the remaining Mill and MPC businesses in Europe, relaunched The Mill in October 2025 and merged MPC into it in June 2026; its studio list now runs to Paris, London, Seoul and Liège. Much of the commercial and episodic work that would once have gone to those names now sits with the independents and groups listed here, several of which picked up Emmy nominations in July 2026.

Every studio here has a New York office in 2026 (one is in upstate New York, and it is marked as such). The list runs in no fixed order of merit, since the right studio depends on whether you are making a 30-second spot or a ten-episode series.

It took Method Studios into the group in 2020, and its 2026 recognition includes Emmy nominations for Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age and Foundation Season 3 and six awards at the AEAF Awards in Sydney.

The studio is best known for character animation and design-led VFX in advertising and entertainment, with a long-running gaming strand that includes the Supercell short Lost & Crowned. 6. Carbon

Independent · Flatiron · heycarbon.com

Carbon is an independent studio for visual effects, motion graphics and design, with offices in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The New York studio is on West 25th Street.

Its commercial work includes Super Bowl spots for Poppi and Discover, and it counts Nike, Google, Xbox, FX Networks and Miller Lite among clients. It also produces title sequences for entertainment, so it is a good fit for briefs that move between effects and graphic design.

7. Ingenuity Studios

Multi-city studio · Hudson Square · ingenuitystudios.com

Ingenuity Studios has made visual effects for more than 20 years across film, television, music videos and advertising. Its New York office is on Desbrosses Street, and it also runs studios in Los Angeles, Toronto and Vancouver.

The studio works with productions from early in the process, which helps on episodic shows where effects are planned into the shoot. Its range from music videos to series work makes it a practical option for mid-sized budgets.

8. Phosphene

Independent · New York · phosphenefx.com

Phosphene is a New York-based independent design and visual effects studio, founded in 2008. It has received an Emmy nomination for Escape at Dannemora and VES nominations, including one for Motherless Brooklyn.

Its work centres on period and invisible effects for New York-shot film and television, where the job is often to rebuild streets and skylines without the audience noticing. Productions working with state tax incentives often look for a studio of this kind based in the city.

9. Nice Shoes

New York headquarters · SoHo · niceshoes.com

Nice Shoes is a post-production studio headquartered on Crosby Street, with offices in Toronto and Minneapolis. It offers VFX and CG alongside animation, design, colour, editorial and beauty finishing.

Recent client work includes campaigns for the New York Mets, Carvana, Hellmann's, Bud Light x UFC, Instacart and CrowdStrike. Having colour and VFX in one building shortens the finishing stage on commercials with fast turnarounds.

10. Harbor

Multi-city studio · New York · harborpicturecompany.com

Harbor is a production and post-production company with locations in New York, Los Angeles, London, Chicago and Atlanta. Its services cover live action, dailies, colour, sound, ADR, VFX, offline editorial and delivery.

11. The-Artery

New York studio · New York · the-artery.com

The-Artery is a New York creative studio making VFX and design-led content for features, episodic and consumer brands. Its work extends to AR and VR experiences, museum and art installations, and live action production.

The studio suits brand projects that start as a commercial and grow into an installation or an immersive piece. Ask to see recent work in the medium you need, as its output spans several formats.

12. Shade VFX

Studio with offices in Los Angeles and upstate New York · Albany area · shadevfx.com

Shade VFX runs studios in Los Angeles and upstate New York, with a roto and tracking division, Branch VFX, based in Albany. It links the two coasts over a fibre network and promotes New York's film tax incentives to productions.

Shade won the Emmy for visual effects on HBO's Westworld and worked on Joker. It is outside the city, so it fits productions that need a New York State spend more than a studio they can walk into.

What to look for in a New York VFX studio

Start with the kind of work. Commercial VFX runs on short schedules, with agency and director reviews every day, while film and episodic work runs for months against a supervisor's shot list. Some studios here do both well; most lean one way, and their reels show it.

Ask where the artists sit. Many New York studios now split shots between the city and offices in Canada, India or Colombia. That can lower cost and add capacity, but it changes who you talk to and when, so ask which shots will be done in New York and who will supervise them.

Check the tax position early. New York State's film and post-production credits can shape where a production places its VFX spend, and some studios set up to qualify for them. Your producer or accountant should confirm eligibility before the bid is final.

Finally, agree how shots will move and be reviewed. Plates, renders and versions add up to terabytes quickly, and notes can scatter across email, chat and review links. Settle on one place for the latest versions, a clear naming scheme and a single record of who approved what.

How Fabric helps VFX teams

Fabric gives a VFX team one workspace for plates, renders, references and production notes, with AI search across all of it. Large files sit in Fabric's cloud drive, which streams files on demand so they take no local disk space, and heavy video opens without a full download. Shared team folders always hold the latest version. There is more on this in your rendering files need a home.

Finding a plate or a past shot is easier with search, which works by meaning across documents, images, PDFs and transcribed video, and includes colour search for visual assets. Similar search takes a frame or reference image and finds related material by composition, colour and subject, which helps when building lookdev references. Supervisor briefings and spotting sessions can be transcribed so that notes are searchable with clickable timestamps.

For shot review, a folder of versions can be published as a web page and shared with password protection. Clients and directors can leave threaded comments on any file through a shared link without creating an account. Annotations cover highlights and comments on PDFs and documents such as shot lists and breakdowns; timestamped comments and drawing on video are coming soon. The review and approval guide describes the setup.

Link analytics shows when each named recipient opened a review link and how long they spent with it, which helps when chasing approvals before a delivery date.

Password protection and link analytics are included on Pro and Team plans. See plans for teams.
