Best Color Grading Studios in Los Angeles (2026)

13 Los Angeles color grading studios doing standout work in 2026, from Hollywood finishing houses to Santa Monica and Culver City boutiques

Introduction

Los Angeles has more colour and finishing capacity than any other city, and the 13 studios below cover most of it, from facilities grading Oscar winners and Emmy nominees to small suites that live on commercials and music videos. They were chosen for recent work, 2025 and 2026 recognition, and the depth of their colourist rosters.

The past two years reshaped the local market. Technicolor Group collapsed in 2025, and in June 2026 TransPerfect folded MPC into The Mill, a combined studio whose site no longer lists a Los Angeles office. Light Iron left Panavision in May 2026 through an employee buyout and now runs from a single Hollywood facility. EFILM's old web address points to Company 3. At the top end, films FotoKem worked on took ten Oscars in March 2026, including Best Picture for One Battle After Another and Best Cinematography for Sinners.

Every studio here has an active Los Angeles area office in 2026, counting Santa Monica, Culver City and Burbank. The list is unranked, since the right choice depends on format, budget and the colourist you want in the room.

The best color grading studios in Los Angeles

1. Company 3

Company 3 Studios Inc. (acquired by Framestore in 2020) · Santa Monica and Hollywood · company3.com

Company 3 opened in Santa Monica in 1997 and remains the largest name in Los Angeles colour, with facilities on Exposition Boulevard and Seward Street. Framestore bought it from Deluxe in November 2020, and its site now describes it as a brand of Company 3 Studios Inc. In 2026 it was credited on 24 Emmy-nominated projects, DTF St. Louis among them, and six of its colourists were shortlisted for the FilmLight Camerimage Colour Awards.

The Los Angeles roster includes Stefan Sonnenfeld, Stephen Nakamura, Siggy Ferstl and Dave Hussey. Ferstl graded all five seasons of The Boys, which ended in 2026, and the company had four films at Venice 2026, including Danny Boyle's INK. It handles features, episodic and advertising, and some senior colourists also work remotely.

2. Picture Shop

Streamland Media · Burbank and Hollywood · pictureshop.com

Picture Shop is Streamland Media's colour, VFX and finishing brand, with Los Angeles sites on West Alameda Avenue in Burbank and Seward Street in Hollywood. It is strongest in episodic television, and its supervising colourist Mitch Paulson worked with Sony on the Signature LUT for the VENICE 2, which the company describes as the first LUT by a Hollywood colourist preinstalled in-camera.

Paulson grades Taylor Sheridan's Lioness, now in its third season, and Mark Kueper graded Hulu's The Season. Walter Volpatto and Peter Doyle are also on the roster. Burbank handles dailies, editorial, colour and VFX under one roof, which suits series that want a single vendor from set to delivery.

3. Light Iron

Employee-owned · Hollywood · lightiron.com

Light Iron was founded in 2009 and spent more than a decade inside Panavision. In May 2026 its staff bought the business's assets and relaunched it as an employee-owned post house, with all of its roughly 15 employees holding equity. Founders Michael and Peter Cioni keep a minority stake as advisers. The company now runs from its De Longpre Avenue facility in Hollywood.

Supervising colourists Ian Vertovec and Corinne Bogdanowicz, both original founders, lead the work alongside general manager Megan Marquis. Recent titles include The Thursday Murder Club, Freakier Friday, Palm Royale and Griselda. Its Galixy software for dailies and metadata is now offered to outside productions.

4. FotoKem

Founded 1963 · Burbank and Hollywood · fotokem.com

FotoKem began in 1963 as a film lab on Cahuenga Boulevard and now offers dailies, colour, sound, VFX and restoration from Burbank and Hollywood. It is one of the few facilities still processing film at scale, and its SHIFT analogue intermediate process was used on Project Hail Mary.

Its 2026 record is hard to match. Films it worked on won ten Oscars in March, and in May it delivered The Mandalorian & Grogu from dailies through final colour in 2D, 3D, IMAX and other large formats. It also produced 70mm and 35mm release prints for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

5. Apache

Independent, founder-led · Santa Monica · apache.tv

Apache is a Dolby-certified colour and finishing house on Broadway in Santa Monica, founded by CEO LaRue Anderson and senior colourist Steve Rodriguez. It splits its time between advertising and long-form, and has a particular reputation for documentaries: colourist Taylor Black has received two HPA nominations in the documentary grading category.

Black graded Rory Kennedy's Queen of Chess for Netflix, which premiered at Sundance in 2026, and Andy Kaufman Is Me for Tribeca 2025. Rodriguez has graded Super Bowl spots for Microsoft Copilot and T-Mobile. Stefanie Schaldenbrand was promoted to executive producer in 2026.

6. Ethos

Independent · Los Angeles · ethos.studio

Ethos is a boutique colour and finishing studio on Gilroy Street, founded by executive producer James Drew and run with managing director Eliana Carranza-Pitcher. It works mainly on commercials, music videos and short films, with a roster of eight colourists including Dante Pasquinelli, Ryan Urzi and Kaitlyn Battistelli.

Brand clients include Apple, Adidas, Gap, Prada and Miu Miu, and its music work covers artists such as Ariana Grande, Charli XCX and Travis Scott. It suits fashion and music projects that need a distinctive look on a short turnaround.

7. LightBenders

Independent · Fox Studios lot, Century City · lightbenders.com

LightBenders was founded in 2014 by Juan Cabrera and works from Building 32 on the Fox Studios lot. It grades features and series, has been Dolby Vision certified since 2017 and is IMF delivery certified, running SGO Mistika and DaVinci Resolve suites.

Credits include 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week and The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, with work for Netflix, Paramount, A24, Showtime and Hulu. It is a sensible option for independent features that want studio-grade HDR deliverables without a large facility's overheads.

8. Tunnel Post

Independent · Santa Monica · tunnelpost.com

Tunnel Post was set up in 2005 to make digital intermediate work affordable for independent films. Its colour technology was acquired by Apple and became the Color application in Final Cut Studio in 2007.

It works from a 15,000 square foot facility on Wilshire Boulevard near the beach, offering colour, VFX, titles, sound mixing, ADR, restoration and delivery. Disney is among its listed clients.

9. Fancy Film

Independent · Silver Lake · fancyfilm.com

Fancy Film has run a post campus on Santa Monica Boulevard in Silver Lake since 2001. It offers HDR colour grading alongside 5.1, 7.1 and Atmos mixing, ADR, DCP creation and distributor deliverables, with a 25-seat 4K screening room on site.

The studio is closely tied to independent and documentary filmmakers. It hosts Rough|Impact, a screening format where late-stage documentaries are tested with an audience before they are finished, and Brooklyn's Blue Table Post uses it as one of its Los Angeles partners.

10. Picture Head

Streamland Media · Hollywood · picturehead.com

Picture Head is a sister company to Picture Shop within Streamland Media, based on Vine Street in Hollywood with further offices in London, Bangalore and Toronto. It grades in SDR, HDR and for projection, including 3D, and has two decades of finishing work behind it.

It is a useful alternative to the larger Streamland facilities for campaigns and features that need finishing and colour handled together. Ask which colourist will be assigned, as its site does not list a named roster.

11. Blacksmith

Independent · Culver City · blacksmith.tv

Blacksmith is a VFX and colour studio with offices in New York and on Washington Boulevard in Culver City. It was founded by Charlotte Arnold, Tom Bussell and Iwan Zwarts, and its colour department lists Terry Simpson and Kevin Ratigan.

The work is almost all high-end advertising, often with directors such as Kim Gehrig and Martin de Thurah and agencies including Droga5 and BBDO. Recent projects include Apple's "Fútbol Begins" and SAP's "Grow the Business". Colour and VFX under one roof can shorten the loop on effects-heavy spots.

12. Ntropic

Independent · Los Angeles · ntropic.com

Ntropic is a production and post studio with offices in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, London and Ho Chi Minh City. Colour grading and editorial finishing sit alongside live action, CG, motion graphics and Unreal Engine work.

Clients include Verizon (for the Super Bowl), Southern California Edison, Banana Boat, Naked Juice and Amazon's Echo Studio. It suits product and tech advertisers who want CG, colour and finishing from one team.

13. Harbor

Independent · Los Angeles and Hollywood · harborpicturecompany.com

Harbor is a production and post-production studio with locations in New York, Los Angeles, Hollywood, London, Chicago and Atlanta. Colour is one of its core services, alongside sound, ADR, VFX, offline editorial and delivery.

It works across features, episodic, music videos, commercials and Super Bowl campaigns, and keeps separate entertainment and advertising teams. That spread makes it one of the few places in town where a film and its marketing campaign can be finished by the same company.

What to look for in a Los Angeles color grading studio

Start with the colourist. In Los Angeles the relationship is usually with a named artist, and senior colourists move between facilities more often than clients expect. Look at that person's recent reel in the format you are making, whether feature, episodic, documentary or a 30-second spot.

Match the facility to the delivery. Features and series need HDR and Dolby Vision mastering, IMF packages and a theatrical-grade room, which Company 3, Picture Shop, FotoKem and Light Iron all provide. Commercials and music videos rarely need that, and a boutique such as Ethos or Apache will usually move faster on short schedules.

Ask how remote sessions work. Most studios here now grade with clients watching from another city, and some senior colourists work remotely by default. Check that the remote stream is calibrated well enough for your sign-off, and agree in advance who has final approval.

Finally, sort out the files before the first session. A grade depends on a clean conform, the right LUTs and camera metadata, and reference stills everyone agrees on. Productions that keep looks, references and approvals in one shared place spend less time in the suite resolving version questions.

How Fabric helps color grading teams

Fabric gives a post team one workspace for footage, references, LUTs and client feedback, with AI search across all of it. Colour work produces heavy files, and Fabric's cloud drive streams them on demand, so large clips and exports open without a full download or local disk space. There is more on this in Fabric's guide to cloud storage for video editors.

Look development runs on references. Search works by meaning across stills, PDFs and transcribed recordings, and colour search finds images by shade. Similar search surfaces frames with a related composition, colour or subject, which helps when a director points at one still and asks for that feel. For teams standardising looks, Fabric's explainer on what a LUT is is a useful primer for producers.

For review, any graded export or stills folder can be published as a web page with password protection, and link analytics shows when each named recipient opened it. Clients and DPs can leave threaded comments through a shared link without an account. Timestamped comments and drawing on video are coming soon, so frame-accurate notes still belong in your grading or review tool for now.

Fabric's AI meeting notes record calls without a bot, which keeps a written record of what was agreed in a look review.

Password protection and link analytics are included on Pro and Team plans. See plans for teams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best color grading studio in Los Angeles?

It depends on the project. For features and episodic, Company 3, Picture Shop, FotoKem and Light Iron have the deepest rosters and the strongest 2026 records. For commercials and music videos, boutiques such as Apache, Ethos and Blacksmith are often a better fit.

Who owns Company 3?

Framestore acquired Company 3 from Deluxe in November 2020. The company now trades as a brand of Company 3 Studios Inc., with Los Angeles facilities in Santa Monica and Hollywood.

What happened to Light Iron?

In May 2026 Light Iron's employees bought the business's assets from Panavision and relaunched it as an employee-owned company. It now works from its Hollywood facility, led by founding colourists Ian Vertovec and Corinne Bogdanowicz.

How much does color grading cost in Los Angeles?

Most studios quote by the hour or by the project, and rates vary with the colourist's seniority, the room and the delivery formats. A commercial grade can take a day, while a feature with HDR and theatrical masters can run to several weeks. Ask for a quote that separates grading, conform and deliverables.

Do Los Angeles colour studios also handle edit and VFX?

Several do. Picture Shop, Harbor and Blacksmith offer VFX alongside colour, and Harbor also covers sound and editorial. For full-service houses, see the best post-production companies in Los Angeles.
