How-to guide

How to share a pitch deck as a link

Fundraising involves sending the same deck to dozens of investors, then waiting. Some reply the same day, many don’t, and an attachment gives you no way to tell whether a partner opened it last night or whether it’s sitting unread under a newsletter. Meanwhile the deck keeps changing: a new customer logo, an updated revenue chart, a revised ask.

This guide covers how founders usually send decks, then shows how to share one from Fabric with a separate named link for each investor, sensible settings for a confidential document, and a way to see which links have been opened.

How founders usually share a pitch deck

Attaching a PDF to an email is the simplest route and the one investors are most used to. Once sent, though, the file can be forwarded freely, you can’t update it, and you have no signal about whether it was read. An outdated version with last quarter’s numbers can stay in circulation for months.

A Google Slides or Google Drive link fixes the versioning problem, since the deck updates in place. The sharing settings need care: set to restricted, investors may hit an access request screen, and set to anyone with the link, there’s little sense of who has looked.

Dedicated deck-sharing tools such as DocSend are built for this job and are widely used by founders because they track views per recipient. They’re another subscription and another place the deck lives, separate from the data room files, financial models and notes you’re keeping elsewhere.

Step 1: Add the deck to Fabric

Export the deck as a PDF, which is the format investors open most easily, and drag it into Fabric or click Upload a file. Fabric also handles PPT and PPTX, and Google Slides can come in through a connection on a paid plan.

Keep the deck in a folder for the raise alongside the supporting material, such as the financial model, cap table and customer references. That folder can later become a data room, which how to set up a data room for fundraising covers in detail.

Step 2: Create a separate link for each investor

Select the deck, click Share, open the Publish tab and click Create link. Name the link after the person and firm, for example “Sarah, Sequoia”, and turn on Collect engagement analytics. Repeat for each investor. Every link is separate with its own settings, so one investor’s link can allow downloads while another’s doesn’t. Publishing is on every plan; analytics are on Pro and Team.

Naming the links is what makes tracking useful. Analytics don’t identify a visitor by name, so a single shared link would only tell you that someone opened it. With one link per investor, each visit belongs to the person you sent it to. How to send a different tracking link to each recipient goes into the method.

Step 3: Set the link up for a confidential document

For a first-meeting deck, many founders prefer to turn Allow downloads off, so investors view the deck at the link rather than saving a copy. Turn it on for a partner who has asked for the file to circulate internally. Leave Allow indexing by search engines off, since a deck is meant for the people you send it to, and consider leaving Allow visitors to copy it to their Fabric off as well.

For decks with sensitive numbers, add a password. Password protection is on the Pro and Team plans: right-click the deck, choose Add password protection and enter a password, then send it separately from the link. Access lasts six hours before the investor enters it again. There’s no password reset, so keep it in a password manager.

If you’d like the links to sit on your company’s address, custom domains are on the Pro plan, and how to share files on your own domain explains the DNS steps.

Step 4: See who has opened it

Each link gets its own chart of traffic over time, along with the date of each visit and the visitor’s location and device. Link analytics let you compare links side by side, so you can see which investors have opened the deck and which haven’t, and time follow-ups accordingly.

A visit from a different city to the one you sent it to can suggest the deck has been passed to a colleague, though it can also mean someone was traveling. How to know if an investor read your pitch deck covers how to read these signals without over-reading them.

Step 5: Update the deck without resending

Editing the source in Fabric updates the published version, so every investor’s link shows the current version. To swap in a new export of the deck, publish the raise folder rather than the single file and replace the PDF inside it; the links you’ve already sent keep working.

Once a conversation moves forward, ask the AI assistant inside the raise folder to check the deck against the financial model, or to list the questions each investor asked in your notes. Answers cite the files they came from.

Frequently asked questions

How do I share a pitch deck so I know if investors opened it?

Create a separate publish link for each investor, name it after them, and turn on engagement analytics. On Pro and Team plans, you’ll see visits on each link with dates, location and device.

Can I stop investors downloading my pitch deck?

Yes. Turn off Allow downloads on the publish link. You can set this differently for each investor.

Is Fabric an alternative to DocSend?

Fabric covers named tracking links, analytics, passwords and download control, alongside the rest of your files and the AI assistant. Analytics show visits, dates, location and device.

Can analytics show exactly which person viewed the deck?

Not from a single link that several people use. Visitors aren’t named, which is why each investor should get their own link, so every visit on it can be attributed to the person you sent it to.

Should I send my deck as a PDF or a link?

A link lets you update the deck after sending, see visits, and control downloads. A PDF attachment is familiar but can’t be changed or tracked once sent.

Can I password protect a pitch deck link?

Yes, on Pro and Team plans. Send the password separately from the link, and save it in a password manager since there’s no reset.

Can I update my deck after investors have the link?

Yes. Edits in Fabric update the published version. For a new export, publish the folder and replace the file inside it.

Which plan do I need to track pitch deck views?

Link analytics need a Pro or Team plan. Publishing itself is on every plan; see pricing for details.
