How-to guide

How to see who viewed your pitch deck

During a raise, a founder might send the same deck to forty investors over three weeks. Some reply within a day, some forward it to a partner, and many go quiet. Knowing which firms have opened the deck, and which ones came back to it, changes who you follow up with on Monday morning and what you say.

This guide covers how founders usually send decks and track them, the trade-offs of each approach, and how to send your deck from Fabric with a named link per investor, so the visits on each link show who has looked. For the wider question of reading investor interest, see how to know if an investor read your pitch deck.

How founders usually send and track a deck

Attaching a PDF is the simplest route and some investors prefer it, since it opens anywhere and can be filed with their notes. It also tells you nothing once sent. An attached deck can be forwarded to other funds, and the version from your first week of outreach keeps circulating after you’ve updated the numbers.

DocSend and similar tools are the usual choice for founders who want tracking. They’re built around this use case, report activity per link, and many investors are used to receiving them. They’re another subscription for the length of the raise, and the deck lives in a separate tool from your data room, financial model and meeting notes.

A Google Slides or presentation-tool link is easy to update in place. Shared with anyone with the link, though, every recipient uses the same address, which makes it hard to tie a view to a particular firm.

Step 1: Add the deck to Fabric

Drag the deck into Fabric or click Upload a file. Fabric handles PDF and PPT/PPTX, and Google Slides can come in through a Google Drive connection on a paid plan. Most founders send a PDF export, which looks the same on every device.

If you expect to revise the deck during the raise, put it in a folder and publish the folder. A folder publishes as a web page, and changes to the source in Fabric update the published version, so swapping in the new deck updates every investor’s link. When diligence starts, the same approach scales into a data room; how to set up a data room for fundraising covers that.

Step 2: Create a named link for each investor

Click Share to open the share modal, open the Publish tab and click Create link. Name the link after the person and firm, for example Sarah, Sequoia, and turn on collect engagement analytics. Repeat for every investor, keeping the same naming pattern across the round so the list of links is easy to scan. You can create as many publish links for one deck as you need, and each one has its own settings and visit record.

Analytics are recorded per link and don’t identify the visitor, so the name on the link is how you know whose visits you’re seeing. If a partner forwards their link to a colleague, those visits appear on the same link, which is often useful in itself. How to send a different tracking link to each recipient has more on the setup. Link analytics are on the Pro and Team plans.

Step 3: Decide what investors can do with the deck

Set allow downloads per link. Many founders keep early outreach view-only and allow downloads for investors who have taken a meeting. Turn off allow indexing by search engines so the deck doesn’t appear in search results, and turn off allow visitors to copy it to their Fabric. If an investor asks for the financial model, publish it with its own named link in the same way, so you can see whether the model was opened as well as the deck.

For a deck with sensitive figures, add a password on Pro or Team: right-click the deck or folder, choose Add password protection and enter a password. Password protection has no reset, so store it in a password manager. On Pro you can also publish on your company’s own domain, so the link investors receive carries your name instead of a third-party address.

Step 4: Read the visits and plan follow-ups

Each link has a chart of traffic over time, plus the date of each visit and the location and device of each visitor. Link analytics let you compare every investor’s link in one place, so you can see who has opened the deck and who hasn’t.

Patterns matter more than any single visit. A link opened the day you sent it, then again three days later from a different city, often means the deck went to a partner meeting. A link with one visit on a phone late at night may only have been skimmed. A link with no visits after a week usually calls for a short follow-up, or a warm introduction to someone else at the firm.

Keep notes on each conversation next to the deck in Fabric. When you prepare for a second meeting, open the folder and ask the AI assistant, which limits itself to that folder and cites the notes it drew from. Useful answers can be saved as notes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if an investor opened my pitch deck?

Send the deck as a published link named after that investor, with collect engagement analytics on. Visits to their link show the date, location and device.

Can I track a pitch deck without DocSend?

Yes. Fabric publish links with analytics on give each investor’s link its own visit record, on the Pro and Team plans.

Does the analytics tell me the investor’s name?

Analytics are per link. Naming each link after the investor, such as Sarah, Sequoia, is how you connect visits to a person.

Should I let investors download my deck?

That’s your call, and you can set it per investor. A common approach is view-only for first outreach and downloads on for investors you’ve met.

Can I update the deck after sending links?

Yes. Publish a folder containing the deck; changes to the source update the published version, and every investor’s link stays the same.

Can I send my deck from my own domain?

On the Pro plan, yes. Add your domain in the publishing screen, add the DNS records Fabric shows you, and choose your domain when you create the link.

Do investors need a Fabric account to view the deck?

No. Published links open in a browser.

What does deck tracking cost?

Link analytics and password protection are on Pro and Team, and custom domains are on Pro. See pricing for current plans.
