How-to guide
How to transcribe a Google Meet

Google Meet is often the default for quick calls because it opens from a calendar invite in the browser with nothing to install. Interviews with candidates, catch-ups with freelancers, and calls with a school or a landlord all happen there. The ease of joining doesn’t extend to keeping a record, and the details of a forty-minute call are hard to reconstruct the next day.
This guide covers how people usually get a transcript from Google Meet, what each option depends on, and how to transcribe a Meet call with the Fabric desktop app so the transcript sits in one searchable library with your other meetings.
How people usually transcribe Google Meet calls
Google Meet has its own transcripts on some Google Workspace editions. When the feature is turned on, the transcript is saved as a Google Doc in the organizer’s Drive after the call. It’s tidy when it’s available, though it depends on the account type and admin settings, and if someone else organized the meeting, the document lands in their Drive rather than yours.
Gemini in Meet can take notes for you on eligible Workspace plans, producing a summary document after the call. Like Meet’s transcripts, availability depends on the plan your organization is on, and personal Gmail accounts may not see the option.
Browser extensions that capture Meet’s live captions are another route. They’re quick to install, but they rely on captions being switched on, and the saved text tends to be a plain dump without timestamps you can jump back to.
Notetaker bots join Meet as a separate participant and ask to be admitted. Hosts sometimes leave them waiting, and guests notice the extra name on the call.
And many people simply open a Google Doc in another tab and type. It’s free and already shared with the right people, but it captures the gist rather than the wording, and switching tabs mid-conversation means missing some of what’s said.
Step 1: Install the Fabric desktop app
Even though Meet runs in the browser, Fabric’s meeting transcription comes from the desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Install it, sign in, and keep it running when you have calls.
Meeting transcription is on paid plans. The individual plans page lists what each includes.
Step 2: Join the Google Meet call and accept the prompt
Open the Meet link from your calendar as usual. The desktop app notices the meeting and offers to transcribe it. Accept, and the transcript fills in as people speak. There’s no bot to admit, so the participant list shows only the people who were invited. How to transcribe Google Meet calls without a bot covers this in more detail.
Before you begin, say that you’re transcribing and check that the other people on the call are comfortable with it. Consent rules for recording differ from place to place.
For a candidate interview, write your questions in a Fabric note before the call and jot impressions as you go. If you lose track of an answer, search the live transcript or ask the AI what the candidate said about their notice period.
Step 3: Bring in Meet transcripts already in your Drive
If your Workspace account has been saving Meet transcripts and Gemini notes to Google Drive, you don’t need to leave them behind. Connect Google Drive from the Fabric marketplace: choose Google Drive, click Install, sign in to Google and grant permissions, and Fabric confirms the connection. Google Drive uses a two-way sync, so files are created in Fabric and kept up to date in both directions. Connections need a paid plan.
Once connected, those Docs are searchable alongside the calls you transcribe in Fabric. How to search Google Drive by what’s inside files explains how search treats Drive content.
Step 4: Use the write-up and search later
When the call ends, Fabric analyzes the transcript and your notes and produces a write-up of the meeting. AI meeting and voice notes explains how the two are combined. Edit the transcript if a name or term came through wrongly.
Weeks later, describe the moment you’re after. Fabric search matches by meaning across transcripts and jumps to the timestamp, so a query like “the landlord’s answer about the boiler repair” finds the right part of the call.
For a round of interviews, keep the calls in one folder, open it, and ask the AI assistant to compare how each candidate answered a particular question. It answers only from that folder and cites timestamps, so you can listen to the original answer before making a decision.
You don’t have to file each call by hand. Fabric writes a short summary of every item, extracts the topics it covers, and suggests tags, and smart collections you set up fill themselves from that content. A collection for supplier calls, for example, picks up new ones as you transcribe them, whether they started in Meet or arrived from Drive.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a transcript of a Google Meet call?
Install the Fabric desktop app and join the Meet call. Fabric detects the meeting and offers to transcribe it in real time. This needs a paid Fabric plan.
Why don’t I see the transcript option in Google Meet?
Meet’s built-in transcripts are available on some Google Workspace editions and can be turned off by an admin. Check your account type or ask your Workspace administrator.
Does Fabric need Google Meet’s own transcripts turned on?
No. Fabric’s desktop app detects the Meet call and transcribes it itself, with no bot joining. Transcription needs a paid Fabric plan.
Does a bot join my Google Meet?
No. Fabric doesn’t add a participant to the call, so there’s nothing for the host to admit.
Can I keep my existing Meet transcripts from Google Drive?
Yes. Connect Google Drive to Fabric and the files sync in both directions, so earlier transcripts become searchable with your new ones.
Can I ask questions about a Google Meet call?
Yes. Ask the AI assistant during the call or afterwards. Answers cite the transcript with timestamps.
Can I edit a Google Meet transcript in Fabric?
Yes. Transcripts in Fabric can be edited, which helps with names, places, and terms that are easy to mishear.
Can I share the Meet write-up?
Yes. Share it with view, comment, or edit permission. Recipients without a Fabric account can still open the link.
What if the meeting isn’t on Google Meet?
The desktop app also detects Zoom and Microsoft Teams calls. For an in-person conversation, start a voice or meeting note manually in any Fabric app, including the mobile app, and you get the same write-up when you stop.
