How-to guide

How to save TikToks and Reels outside the app

Short videos carry a surprising amount of useful information. A 40-second recipe, a stretch for a sore back, a trick for a spreadsheet formula, a renter explaining their rights, a creator walking through the camera settings they use. Tapping save in TikTok or Instagram keeps the video, but only inside that app, in a grid of thumbnails that all look alike after a few months.

This page covers how people usually keep short videos, where those methods break down, and how to save TikToks and Reels into Fabric so they’re kept together outside the apps, with transcripts that make them searchable.

How people usually save TikToks and Reels

The in-app save is the obvious choice. TikTok has Favorites and collections, Instagram has Saved and its own collections. They’re quick, and they’re fine for rewatching a recent video. Finding something from last spring means scrolling, since the saved lists can’t be searched by what was said in the videos, and the TikTok and Instagram lists never meet.

Downloading the video or screen recording it is the next step for people who want a copy they control. It works, and the file lands in the camera roll among photos and other clips, named by date. Content creators who collect references this way often describe the same result: hundreds of saved clips and no quick way to find the right one.

Some people send links to themselves in a chat or paste them into a notes app with a line of description. That’s searchable, but only by the line you wrote at the time. How to save recipes from Instagram and TikTok looks at this problem for the most common case, cooking videos.

Step 1: Share videos to Fabric from the app

Install the Fabric app for iOS or Android from the mobile download page. In TikTok or Instagram, tap Share on the video, then choose Fabric from the share sheet. If Fabric isn’t in the first row, look under More or Copy Link and paste the link into the Fabric app.

Add a comment as you save it. A few words about why you kept it, like “good sourdough shaping technique” or “ideas for client’s launch video”, go a long way. Tags help when you collect for a project.

On a computer, copy the video’s link and paste it into Fabric, where it becomes a bookmark.

Step 2: Get a transcript of what was said

Fabric transcribes TikToks and Reels from the link, so the spoken part of each video becomes text you can read and search. Transcription needs a paid plan. Transcripts can be edited if a word comes out wrong.

For short videos that are mostly talking, such as tips, explainers and reviews, the transcript holds most of what made the video worth saving. For a recipe, it means the quantities a creator read out loud are written down for you.

Some clips have music and on-screen captions but no speech. For those, the comment you add when saving does more of the work, so it’s worth a sentence describing what the video shows. A screenshot of a caption frame is another option, since Fabric reads text inside images.

Step 3: Keep a copy of the video itself

If you’ve downloaded a video or made a screen recording of it, upload the file to Fabric as well. It supports MP4, MOV and WebM, and uploaded video can be transcribed the same way. With the desktop app, videos on the Fabric drive take no space on your computer and stream when you open them.

The Fabric mobile app can also back up your camera roll automatically, either all of it or chosen folders, so screen recordings saved there can reach your library without a separate step.

Step 4: Find a video by what was said in it

Fabric processes each video as it arrives: it creates embeddings for search by meaning, writes a summary, extracts topics, and suggests tags. Press Cmd+F (Mac) / Ctrl+F (Windows), or tap Search on your phone, and describe what you remember. Search covers transcripts and matches by meaning and keyword, and results jump to the timestamp.

A search like “stretch for lower back pain lying on the floor” can find the right clip among hundreds. To group videos without filing them, set up smart collections for the subjects you save most, such as recipes, workouts or fashion.

Step 5: Ask questions across your saved videos

Put related videos in a folder, open it, and ask the AI assistant. “Which of these recipes use chickpeas, and what quantities?” returns an answer that cites the videos with timestamps you can click. Save the answer as a note to keep a shopping list or plan.

Creators and marketers can use the same approach on reference clips, asking what hooks or formats come up most in a folder of saved examples. When one video is close to what you need, similarity search finds others like it in your library.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save TikToks outside the TikTok app?

Tap Share on the video and choose Fabric, or copy the link and paste it into Fabric. The link is saved to your library, and it can be transcribed from the link on a paid plan.

How do I save Instagram Reels somewhere else?

Share the Reel to Fabric from Instagram, or copy its link into the Fabric app. Fabric can transcribe Reels from the link.

Can I search what was said in a TikTok?

Yes, once it’s transcribed. Search covers the transcript and takes you to the timestamp.

Can I keep TikToks and Reels in the same place?

Yes. Both go into the same Fabric library, and smart collections can group them by topic.

Can I save a screen recording of a video?

Yes. Upload the file as MP4 or MOV, or let the mobile app back up your camera roll. Uploaded video can be transcribed too.

Does transcribing TikToks cost extra?

Transcription is part of Fabric’s paid plans. See pricing for the options.

Can I get to my saved TikToks from a computer?

Yes. Your Fabric library is the same on the web, the desktop apps and the phone apps, so anything you shared from your phone is there on the laptop.

Can I ask AI about the videos I’ve saved?

Yes. The AI assistant answers from the transcripts and cites the videos with clickable timestamps.

How do I find a TikTok I saved months ago?

Describe what happened in the video in Fabric search. With a transcript, search matches the spoken content by meaning, so the exact words aren’t needed.
