How-to guide

How to give ChatGPT or Claude access to your YouTube videos

YouTube is where a lot of learning happens now: conference talks, lectures, coding walkthroughs, interviews, product reviews. Saving a video is easy. Using what was said in it is harder, because the useful part is spoken, often 40 minutes in, and a Watch later playlist only stores titles and thumbnails.

This page covers how people get YouTube content in front of ChatGPT or Claude today, then how to save videos to Fabric so they’re transcribed, connect Fabric to your AI tool, and ask questions across every video you’ve kept.

How people usually ask an AI about YouTube videos

Pasting the video link into the chat is the first thing most people try. What comes back depends on what the tool can retrieve from YouTube at that moment, so results vary from video to video, and each link has to be pasted again in each new conversation.

A more reliable route is copying the transcript. YouTube shows one for many videos under Show transcript, and there are websites that extract it. You paste the text into ChatGPT or Claude and ask your question. It works, but a one-hour talk produces a long block of text, and doing this for ten videos to compare them takes a while.

Playlists and Watch later keep the videos themselves organized and leave the spoken content where it was. Searching “that talk where someone explained cache invalidation with a restaurant analogy” won’t match a title. How to save everything you find online in one place covers the broader habit of keeping saved media together.

Step 1: Save YouTube links to Fabric

Paste a YouTube link into Fabric and it’s saved as a bookmark. While watching in a browser, the browser extension saves the page in one step. On a phone, tap Share in the YouTube app and choose Fabric from the share sheet.

Add a comment or tags as you save if it helps, such as a note on why the video mattered or which project it’s for.

Older saves can come across too. Copy links from a playlist, or from a document where you’ve been collecting videos, and paste them into Fabric, or share them from the YouTube app on your phone. Grouping them in a folder by subject, such as Conference talks or Recipes, makes later prompts easier to word.

Step 2: Let Fabric transcribe the videos

Fabric transcribes YouTube videos from the link. TikTok and podcast links work the same way. Transcripts are searchable and editable, so you can correct a misheard name. Transcription needs a paid plan.

Once a transcript exists, Fabric search reads it alongside your notes, documents and articles, and results jump to the exact timestamp. Try a search for a phrase you remember from a talk before connecting another tool. If Fabric finds the moment, ChatGPT or Claude will be searching the same transcripts.

Fabric also writes a summary of each saved item and extracts its topics, which helps when a video’s title says little about what’s covered.

Step 3: Connect Fabric to ChatGPT or Claude

Add Fabric to your AI tool with the Fabric MCP server. The server URL is https://mcp.api.fabric.so/mcp, and sign-in uses OAuth, so you won’t handle API keys.

In ChatGPT, go to Settings and then Connectors, choose Add Connector, enter the server URL, name it, and save. Next, open a new conversation, click More, choose Add Connectors, select Fabric, and sign in.

In Claude, the quickest path is Fabric’s listing in Claude’s official connector directory. The manual alternative in Claude Desktop is Settings, then Connectors, then add a custom connector with a name and the server URL, followed by the sign-in prompts.

If the sign-in step fails, remove Fabric from the tool and add it again.

Step 4: Ask about what was said across your videos

With the connector turned on, ChatGPT or Claude can search your Fabric library, which includes the transcripts of saved videos, and read what it finds. Prompts can refer to the content rather than the title: “Search my Fabric for the YouTube talk that explained cache invalidation with a restaurant analogy and summarize the argument,” or “Find the cooking videos I saved that mention brining a turkey and list the brine ratios they use.”

Comparisons across videos become practical too. Ask the AI tool to find the three interviews you saved with a particular founder and pull out where their advice changed between them.

It also helps when you’re building on what you watched. Ask the AI tool to read the transcripts of the four tutorials you saved on a framework and write a single set of setup steps, noting where the videos disagree.

If you’d like answers with clickable timestamps, ask Fabric’s own AI assistant instead. Its answers cite sources, including timestamps for audio and video, and it runs on models from several labs, including OpenAI and Claude. From ChatGPT or Claude, you can also ask for the results to be saved to Fabric as a note, which counts against your Fabric storage and AI usage.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT watch a YouTube video?

Through Fabric, ChatGPT works from the transcript. Save the video link to Fabric, which transcribes it on a paid plan, then connect Fabric to ChatGPT so it can search and read your library.

How do I get a YouTube transcript into Claude?

Save the link to Fabric so it’s transcribed, then add Fabric as a connector in Claude. Claude can then search the transcript along with everything else in your library. How LLMs use your files explains what the model does with that text.

Does Fabric transcribe YouTube videos on the free plan?

No. Transcription needs a paid plan. Pricing lists what each plan includes.

Can I fix mistakes in a transcript?

Yes. Transcripts in Fabric can be edited, which is useful for names and technical terms.

Can I search inside YouTube videos I’ve saved?

Yes. Once a video is transcribed, Fabric search covers what was said, and results jump to the exact timestamp.

Does this work for TikTok and podcasts too?

Yes. Fabric transcribes TikTok and podcast links the same way, and they become searchable from a connected AI tool.

Can I save YouTube videos from my phone?

Yes. Use Share in the YouTube app and choose Fabric. The mobile apps are available for iOS and Android.

Do I need an API key to connect Fabric to ChatGPT?

No. You add the server URL and sign in with OAuth.

Can Claude compare several YouTube videos at once?

Yes. With the videos transcribed in Fabric and Fabric connected, ask Claude to find them and compare what each one says. Naming a folder in the prompt helps it pick the right set.
