How-to guide

How to give ChatGPT or Claude access to your videos

Recorded videos tend to hold information that never made it into writing. A product demo explains a feature better than the docs, a training session covers a process step by step, and a customer interview contains the exact words someone used to describe a problem. The files sit in a drive as MP4s and MOVs with names like Recording_0412, and the useful parts are locked in the audio.

This guide explains how people usually get video content into ChatGPT or Claude, and how to keep your video files in Fabric, have them transcribed, and connect Fabric so either AI tool can search and read what was said.

How people usually get video content into an AI tool

Uploading the video file to a chat is the obvious first try. Video files are large, uploads take time, and what the tool can do with a long recording varies. Even when it works, the file belongs to one conversation and has to go up again for the next.

The route many people settle on is a transcript. They run the video through a transcription service or the transcript feature of their meeting or editing software, download a text file, and paste or upload that to ChatGPT or Claude. The answers are good, but each transcript is a separate file in a separate place, and it drifts away from the video it came from.

Teams with lots of recordings often keep them in a shared cloud drive sorted by date or project. That keeps the files safe. Finding the recording where a specific question came up still means scrubbing through footage, and a drive search matches filenames and folders more readily than speech.

Step 1: Upload your videos to Fabric

Drag video files into the Fabric web or desktop app, or click Upload a file. MP4, MOV and WebM are supported for transcription, and uploading handles large numbers of files at once. From a phone, use the share sheet to send a video to Fabric.

With the desktop app installed, Fabric appears as a virtual drive on Mac, Windows and Linux. You can move a folder of recordings into it like any other folder. Videos on the drive take no space on your computer and stream when you open them, which matters with large footage. How to access cloud files without using disk space goes into that setup.

Short videos from TikTok and Reels can be saved by link instead, and Fabric transcribes those from the link.

Step 2: Transcribe them in Fabric

Fabric transcribes uploaded audio and video, so each video gets a transcript that stays attached to the file. Transcripts are searchable and can be edited if a product name or a speaker’s surname comes out wrong. Transcription needs a paid plan.

Fabric also writes a summary of each video and extracts its topics, so a recording named Recording_0412 can still be found by subject. Search covers transcribed audio and video along with your other files, and results jump to the timestamp where the words were spoken.

If you work with others on the footage, people you share it with as commenters can leave timestamped comments on a video, and a comment can include a drawing on the frame.

Step 3: Add the Fabric connector to ChatGPT or Claude

The Fabric MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude and other AI tools search Fabric and read file contents. Its address is https://mcp.api.fabric.so/mcp. Sign-in is OAuth, and setup is a matter of a minute or so.

Claude: find Fabric in Claude’s official connector directory and add it. Or, in Claude Desktop, open Settings, go to Connectors, add a custom connector, enter a name and the URL, and complete the sign-in prompts.

ChatGPT: open Settings, go to Connectors, and choose Add Connector. Fill in the URL and a name, and save. Then, in a new conversation, click More, choose Add Connectors, select Fabric and sign in.

Step 4: Ask questions about your recordings

Once connected, ChatGPT or Claude can search your Fabric library, including the transcripts of your videos, and read what it finds. Ask about the content directly: “Search Fabric for the product demo recording where we showed the export settings and list the steps described,” or “Find the customer interview videos in my Fabric folder Q3 research and summarize the complaints about onboarding.”

This is useful for turning recordings into written material. Ask the AI tool to read a training video’s transcript and draft a checklist from it, then save the draft to Fabric as a note. It can create notes, folders and tasks there, which count against your Fabric storage and AI usage.

For a team with a back catalog of recordings, this saves a lot of scrubbing. Before anyone sits through an hour of footage, ask the AI tool which recordings cover the topic and what each one says about it, then watch only the relevant one. A new hire can ask “which of our training videos explain the refund process?” and be pointed to the right files.

When you want to jump to the moment in the video itself, use Fabric’s own AI assistant. It cites sources with clickable references, including timestamps for video.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT analyze a video file?

Through Fabric, ChatGPT works with the video’s transcript. Upload the video to Fabric, which transcribes it on a paid plan, then connect Fabric to ChatGPT as a connector.

Which video formats can Fabric transcribe?

Fabric transcribes MP4, MOV and WebM video, plus YouTube, TikTok and podcast links. Video file formats explained covers the differences between formats.

Will storing videos in Fabric fill up my laptop?

No. Files on the Fabric desktop drive take no space on your computer and stream when you open them.

Can Claude find a specific moment in a video?

Claude can search the transcript through Fabric to find where a topic came up. Fabric’s own search and AI assistant link straight to the timestamp.

Is video transcription included in the free plan?

No. Transcription needs a paid plan, while file uploads are on every plan. See pricing.

Can I edit a video transcript?

Yes. Transcripts in Fabric can be edited, which helps with product names, jargon and speakers’ names.

Can other AI tools read my video transcripts?

Yes. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code with Copilot and other MCP clients that support remote HTTP servers can connect with the same server URL.

Can collaborators comment on my videos?

Yes. Share the video with commenter permission and they can leave timestamped comments, including drawings on the frame.

Can ChatGPT read transcripts of TikToks or Reels I’ve saved?

Yes. Fabric transcribes TikTok and Reels links on a paid plan, and once Fabric is connected, ChatGPT can search those transcripts with the rest of your library.
