How-to guide
How to find a receipt by what you bought

The blender stopped working eleven months after you bought it, and the warranty needs proof of purchase. You remember the blender well. You’re less sure whether it came from a department store or online, whether the receipt was emailed or handed over at the register, and whether that was last spring or the one before.
This guide covers how people usually track down a receipt for a specific purchase, and how to keep receipts in Fabric so you can find one by searching for the thing you bought.
How people usually find a receipt for something specific
For online purchases, inbox search is the usual first step. Typing the product name works when the order confirmation lists it. Some confirmations only show an order number and a total, and some retailers send the receipt in a later email, so the search can turn up the shipping notice but not the receipt itself.
Retailer accounts keep order history, which is reliable for that one shop. If you can’t remember where you bought something, it means logging in to several accounts in turn. Bank and card statements can confirm the date and the store, and then you start the search again with that detail.
Paper receipts go into wallets, drawers and envelopes. Thermal paper fades, and a drawer of receipts is slow to sort through when you’re looking for one line item. Photographing receipts helps, though the photos then sit in a camera roll sorted only by date.
Step 1: Send receipts to Fabric as they arrive
For email receipts, forward the message or the PDF attachment to your Fabric email address. It only accepts mail from your verified account address, and you can approve extra senders, such as a partner’s address, for a shared household or a team. How to save email bills and receipts automatically sets this up as a routine.
For paper receipts, take a photo in the Fabric mobile app or upload one from your camera roll. Search reads text in photos, so the store name, the items and the total all become searchable. The apps are on the mobile download page, and the mobile app can also back up your camera roll automatically if you’d rather keep photographing receipts with the regular camera.
For receipts you download from a retailer’s website, drag the PDFs into Fabric or click Upload a file. Search reads the text inside PDFs and opens results at the exact page.
Step 2: Search for the item you bought
Click Search or press Cmd+F (Mac) / Ctrl+F (Windows) and type the purchase as you remember it: “blender”, “winter boots”, “office chair”. Search is hybrid, matching by meaning as well as keyword, so a search for a blender can also bring up a receipt that lists the product by its brand and model name.
Each receipt is processed when it arrives. Fabric creates embeddings for meaning-based search, writes a summary, extracts attributes such as content type, and suggests tags. That’s how a vague search like “kitchen appliance from last year” has something to work with.
Narrow results with the kind-of-item filter (images for photographed receipts, files for PDFs) or a tag. If you know a model number or order number, put it in quotes for an exact match.
Step 3: Search your inbox from the same place
Receipts you never forwarded can still be found. Connect Gmail or Outlook as a connection, then use the knowledge search panel, on the right of the search screen or in the bottom drawer on mobile. It searches Fabric and your connected apps together, and you can ask follow-ups like “the one from the department store, not the online order”. Connections need a paid plan.
When the panel finds the right email, forward it to your Fabric email address so the receipt sits with the rest. Doing that for anything with a warranty or a return window means the next search for that purchase can be answered from Fabric alone, with your own comment attached.
Step 4: Ask the AI when you bought it and what it cost
Sometimes you need the details more than the receipt. Ask the AI assistant “when did I buy the blender, where from, and how much was it?” It searches Fabric and your connected apps and answers with clickable references, so you can open the receipt and attach it to the warranty claim.
If you keep receipts in one folder, open that folder and open the assistant there. It limits itself to that folder and analyzes everything in it, which helps with questions that span several receipts, like “what did we spend on the bathroom renovation?” Save a useful answer as a note.
For expense claims and tax returns, how to find a receipt when you need it for expenses and how to keep receipts for tax time cover those routines.
Step 5: Keep receipts next to warranties and manuals
A smart collection for receipts fills itself based on content, so new receipts gather in one place without filing. Adding a comment when you save, such as “2-year warranty, registered online”, keeps the useful context with the receipt.
Storing the manual and warranty card alongside makes the next claim quicker. How to store warranties and manuals so you can find them walks through that setup.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a receipt when I only remember what I bought?
Save your receipts in Fabric and search for the item. Search reads text in PDFs and photos and matches by meaning, so the product name or a description is enough.
Can Fabric read paper receipts?
Yes. Photograph the receipt or upload a photo, and the text in it becomes searchable.
How do I save email receipts?
Forward them to your Fabric email address, which accepts mail from your verified account address and any senders you approve.
Can I search my Gmail for receipts from Fabric?
Yes, once Gmail is connected. The knowledge search panel searches it alongside Fabric. Connections need a paid plan.
Can I find a receipt by order number?
Yes. Put the order number in quotes for an exact match.
Can the AI total up what I spent on something?
Ask the AI assistant inside your receipts folder. It analyzes the receipts there and cites each one, so you can check the figures.
Do I need to sort receipts into folders?
No. Search works without organizing. A folder or smart collection helps if you want to ask the AI about receipts only.
Is saving receipts free?
Uploading photos and PDFs is on the free plan, which has storage and file size caps. Email connections need a paid plan. See pricing.
