How-to guide

How to back up your screenshots

Screenshots hold a surprising amount of useful information: a boarding pass, a booking reference, a chart from a meeting, an error message for IT, a recipe from a story that vanished a day later. They also pile up faster than anything else. A phone can collect thousands, and a Mac desktop can disappear under files named Screenshot 2026-03-14 at 09.41.22.

This guide looks at how people usually keep screenshots, why they often go missing when a phone or laptop is replaced, and how to back them up to Fabric automatically so each one stays searchable by what it shows.

How people usually keep screenshots

On a phone, screenshots land in the camera roll next to photos. If iCloud Photos or Google Photos is turned on, they’re backed up along with everything else, which is a reasonable safety net. They’re also mixed in with thousands of photos, and many people clear them out in bulk to free space, taking the useful ones with the rest.

On a computer, macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default, and Windows puts them in a Screenshots folder inside Pictures. Neither location is part of a cloud backup unless you’ve set one up for it, so a laptop that fails takes its screenshots with it.

Some people paste important screenshots into a notes app or email them to themselves. That makes the image easier to find later, at the cost of a manual step that tends to get skipped when you’re in a hurry, which is when screenshots get taken.

Step 1: Import phone screenshots automatically

Install Fabric on your phone from the mobile download page. Fabric imports screenshots automatically from iOS and Android, so each one you take is backed up to your library without you opening the app.

Once screenshots are safely in Fabric, clearing them from your phone becomes less risky. How to clear your camera roll without losing photos covers doing that carefully. For a single screenshot you want to keep with a note, use the share sheet and choose Fabric, then add a comment or tags.

Step 2: Send desktop screenshots to the Fabric drive

Install the Fabric desktop app on your Mac, Windows or Linux computer. It mounts Fabric as a virtual drive, so it appears in Finder or File Explorer as a normal location.

On a Mac, press Cmd+Shift+5, open Options and choose Other Location to point screenshots at a folder on the Fabric drive. On Windows, you can drag the existing Screenshots folder into Fabric, or save individual captures there from the Snipping Tool. Either way, new captures are stored in Fabric rather than on your disk, since files on the drive take no space on your computer.

For the backlog already on your desktop, select the screenshots and drag them into Fabric, or click Upload a file. Uploading handles large numbers of files at once.

Step 3: Capture web pages with the browser extension

When the thing you want is on a website, the Fabric browser extension for Chrome, Safari and Firefox saves a screenshot of the page straight to Fabric. It can also save the whole website, selected text or images, so you can keep the page itself alongside the picture of it.

This skips the desktop entirely and keeps the capture next to everything else you’ve saved. Quick capture lists the other ways to get things in from a phone or computer.

A common case is a support conversation or a delivery tracking page you may need as a record later. Saving the page screenshot together with the page text means you have both the visual proof and something you can search and quote from.

Step 4: Find a screenshot by what’s in it

Each screenshot is processed when it arrives. Fabric creates embeddings, writes a short summary, extracts attributes such as content type, concepts and colors, and suggests tags. Search reads the text in a screenshot and understands its visual content, so a query for “flight confirmation Lisbon” or “the bar chart with Q3 revenue” can find the right image among thousands.

Put a booking code or error number in quotes for an exact match. To find other captures of the same app or page, select one and run a similarity search. How to search photos by what’s in them has more examples that apply to screenshots too.

Step 5: Group screenshots without sorting them by hand

If you’d like some structure, set up smart collections that fill themselves based on content, such as one for receipts and confirmations and another for design inspiration. New screenshots that match are added as they come in.

You can also ask the AI assistant about a folder of screenshots, for example “what were the error messages from last week’s testing?”, and it cites the images it used.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up screenshots from my iPhone automatically?

Install the Fabric app. It imports screenshots from iOS automatically, so new ones are backed up to your library without any extra steps.

Does it work on Android too?

Yes. Fabric imports screenshots automatically from Android as well as iOS.

How do I change where Mac screenshots are saved?

Press Cmd+Shift+5, click Options, and choose Other Location. With the Fabric desktop app installed, you can pick a folder on the Fabric drive so screenshots are stored there.

Can I search the text inside my screenshots?

Yes. Search reads text in images and screenshots, and it also understands what’s visually in them. Use quotes for an exact match on a code or number.

Can I delete screenshots from my phone once they’re backed up?

Once they’ve been imported into Fabric, you have a copy there. Check that the ones you need appear in your Fabric library before clearing them from the phone.

Will backing up screenshots take up space on my laptop?

No. Screenshots saved to the Fabric drive are stored in Fabric and only stream to your computer when you open one, so the folder can grow without using disk space.

Can I organize screenshots automatically?

Fabric summarizes each screenshot, extracts attributes and suggests tags, and smart collections you set up fill themselves from that content. Folders and tags are optional, since search works without them.

Where do Windows screenshots go, and how do I back them up?

Captures saved with the Print Screen shortcut or the Snipping Tool usually end up in the Screenshots folder inside Pictures. Drag that folder into Fabric for the backlog, and save new captures to the Fabric drive.

Do I need a paid plan to back up screenshots?

File uploads and limited AI are on the free plan, which has storage caps. See pricing for what each plan includes.
