Why getting things into your second brain is so hard


The friction of saving things kills every second brain system. If capture takes more than two seconds, it doesn't happen. That's why we built a virtual drive.



Every second brain guide focuses on what to do after you've captured something: how to organise it, how to connect ideas, how to retrieve what you need. Almost none of them address the harder problem: getting things in.

Capture is where most second brain systems quietly die. Not because the user gives up on the concept but because the act of saving something to the system takes just enough friction, just enough cognitive overhead, that it doesn't happen consistently. And a second brain that you only sometimes feed is a second brain with gaps, which means you can't trust it to have what you need, which means you stop relying on it, which means you stop feeding it entirely.

Where the friction lives

The app-switching tax. You're working in Google Docs and find something worth saving. To capture it to your second brain, you need to: switch to the second brain app, create a new entry, switch back to the source, copy the content, switch to the second brain app again, paste it, add metadata, save. Seven steps and two app switches for a single capture. If this happens ten times a day, the overhead is cumulative and exhausting.

The decision tax. Every capture in a traditional system requires a decision: where does this go? Which folder? Which project? Which tags? These decisions are individually small and collectively paralysing, especially when you're in the middle of other work and the capture interrupts your flow. The research on decision fatigue suggests that even trivial decisions consume cognitive resources, and a system that demands a decision for every capture burns through those resources fast.

The format tax. Your knowledge arrives in every format: PDFs from email, screenshots from your phone, voice memos from your commute, web pages from your browser, documents from shared drives, slides from presentations. Most second brain tools are optimised for one or two formats (usually text notes and web clips) and treat everything else as an attachment or a second-class citizen. Getting a PDF, an image, or a voice memo into the system requires extra steps that text doesn't, which means non-text content is captured inconsistently or not at all.

The "I'll do it later" tax. When capture friction is high, you defer it. "I'll save this later." You won't. The tab closes, the meeting ends, the idea fades, the reference is forgotten. The knowledge that should be in your second brain never arrives because "later" never comes. Every deferred capture is a permanent gap.


The virtual drive fix

The lowest-friction way to save a file on a computer is to drag it into a folder. Everyone knows how to do it. It takes one second. There's no app to switch to, no interface to navigate, no metadata to enter, no format conversion.

Connected tools. Google Drive, Dropbox, email, Slack, and dozens of other tools flow content into your library automatically. You don't capture from these sources. The content is captured by the connection, continuously, without any action on your part.


The compound effect of zero friction

The difference between a system with two-second capture and a system with thirty-second capture isn't convenience. It's completeness. The two-second system captures everything because the friction never reaches the threshold where you defer. The thirty-second system captures selectively because the overhead makes you choose which things are "worth" saving, and those choices introduce gaps.

How does the virtual drive work technically? Fabric mounts as a virtual filesystem on your computer (macOS and Windows). It appears alongside your local drives in Finder or Explorer. Files are streamed from the cloud on demand rather than synced to local disk, which means the drive uses minimal local storage regardless of how large your library grows.

Does the virtual drive work with other apps? Yes. Because it appears as a standard folder, any app that can open files from a folder can open files from Fabric's virtual drive. Open a PDF in Preview, a document in Word, a spreadsheet in Excel, all from the Fabric drive. It works like a normal folder because to your operating system, it is a normal folder.

What happens if I lose internet connection? Recently accessed files are cached locally for continued access. New files can't be added to the drive without a connection, but you can still work with cached content. Other capture paths (notes, voice memos) work regardless and sync when connectivity returns.

How much local storage does the virtual drive use? Minimal. The drive streams files on demand rather than syncing your entire library. Only recently accessed files are cached locally. A library with 100GB of content might use a few hundred MB of local cache.

Can I use the virtual drive alongside Dropbox or Google Drive? Yes. Many people keep Dropbox or Google Drive for file sync with collaborators and use Fabric's virtual drive as their personal knowledge library. You can also connect Dropbox or Google Drive to make those files searchable from Fabric alongside your library content.

What file types can I drag into the virtual drive? Any file type. PDFs, documents, images, audio, video, presentations, spreadsheets, ebooks, and any other file. The semantic search indexes the content of supported text-based formats and the metadata of all formats.

Is this the same as iCloud Drive or OneDrive? Conceptually similar (a cloud-backed folder on your computer) but architecturally different. iCloud Drive and OneDrive provide cloud storage.
