Why bookmark managers will never be enough

You don't have a saving problem. You have a finding problem. Saving a link doesn't help if you can't search what's inside it six months later.
Most people with more than 500 bookmarks can't find anything in them. The bookmarks are there: carefully tagged, meticulously categorised, saved with the best of intentions. They're also never revisited, because the retrieval experience is so poor that it's faster to search the web again than to search your own bookmarks.
This is the bookmark paradox: the act of saving creates the feeling of preserving knowledge, but the knowledge is only preserved if you can find it when you need it. Most bookmark managers make saving easy and finding hard, which means the saving is a ritual that produces minimal actual value.
The three failures of bookmarks
They save pointers, not content. A bookmark saves a URL. The article at that URL might change, move behind a paywall, get reorganised to a new URL, or disappear entirely. The average lifespan of a webpage is roughly 100 days. Your bookmark collection is gradually filling with dead links to content that no longer exists.

The article's title is "The Science of Rest" and you tagged it "neuroscience." Neither the title nor the tag matches your search. The knowledge is inside the article, but the bookmark manager can't see inside articles.
They isolate bookmarks from everything else. Your bookmarks live in the bookmark manager. Your notes live in a notes app. Your files live in Google Drive. Your voice memos live on your phone. Each contains a piece of your knowledge, and none of them can search the others. The bookmark about pricing strategy can't see the note you wrote about pricing or the PDF with pricing research.
What replaces bookmarks
The fix isn't a better bookmark manager. It's a knowledge library that saves content (not just URLs), searches by meaning (not just keywords), and includes everything (not just bookmarks).
