Descript free plan limits in 2026

What you actually get, what runs out first, and when it makes sense to upgrade

Last updated October 2026

Descript's free plan lets you test transcript-based editing without paying. You can import media, generate a transcript, edit by cutting and rearranging text, and export the result. The plan is generous enough to evaluate the workflow and finish a small project. It is not generous enough for regular production. This page breaks down every limit, explains how media minutes are consumed, and covers the points where most people hit the ceiling.

The free plan includes the core editing experience: import audio or video, get a transcript, edit through the text, apply basic AI features, and export. That is enough to understand whether Descript's editing model suits the way you work.

Media minutes, not transcription hours

Descript's allowance system tracks media minutes, not just transcription. Every piece of audio or video you import or record in Descript consumes minutes from your monthly allowance, whether or not every file is transcribed. This distinction matters because the allowance depletes faster than you might expect.

A 45-minute podcast interview consumes 45 minutes of your 60-minute allowance. If you record a second camera angle or a separate audio track, those count separately. A single recording session with two inputs can consume the entire monthly allowance before you have started editing.

Sixty minutes resets each billing cycle. Minutes do not roll over. If you use 30 minutes in September, you still get 60 in October, not 90.

The 720p export ceiling

The free plan exports video at 720p maximum. This is the most practical constraint for many users because it determines where the output can go.

720p is adequate for internal review, a quick test, a draft shared with a collaborator, or a social post where the platform will recompress anyway. It is not adequate for a YouTube video where 1080p is the expected baseline, a client deliverable with a resolution specification, broadcast or streaming platform delivery, or any output that will be cropped or reframed downstream (cropping a 720p source produces a visibly soft result).

The export is watermark-free. Older comparisons sometimes claim Descript's free tier adds a watermark, but that is no longer the case. The constraint is resolution, not branding.

Upgrading to Hobbyist raises export to 1080p. Creator and Business support 4K.

AI feature limits

The free plan includes a small AI credit allowance. Descript's AI features (filler word removal, Studio Sound, green screen, Overdub voice cloning) are available but limited in how many times you can use them per month.

For a single short project, the AI allowance is usually sufficient to try each feature. For regular production where you rely on filler word removal on every episode or Studio Sound on every recording, the free credits run out quickly.

Creator ($15/mo) and Pro ($30/mo) include substantially more AI capacity. If you find yourself using the AI features on every project, the free plan is a trial rather than a workflow.

One seat, one editor

The free plan supports one editor. Comments and live collaboration are included, so a collaborator can watch and comment, but only one person can create projects, manage media, and administer the workspace.

For a solo creator testing the tool, this is fine. For a team where a producer, an editor, and an account manager all need to touch projects, the single-seat limit means the free plan serves one person's evaluation rather than a team workflow.

Paid plans scale seats. Creator supports individual use with more capacity. Pro allows up to three editors. Business and Enterprise support larger teams.

No professional timeline export

Descript can export project timelines to Premiere Pro (XML), Final Cut Pro (FCPXML), DaVinci Resolve, and other professional NLEs. This is a powerful feature for teams that use Descript for rough assembly and transcript-based editing, then move to a traditional NLE for finishing.

Timeline export is not available on the free plan. If your intended workflow is "rough cut in Descript, finish in Premiere," you need a paid plan to complete the round trip.

The 1 GB upload limit

Individual files are capped at 1 GB on the free plan. For most web-ready formats (H.264, AAC), this covers a reasonable duration. For camera originals (ProRes, BRAW, RED) or high-bitrate masters, 1 GB may represent only a few minutes of footage.

This limit matters most for teams working with professional codecs. If your source material is ProRes 422 HQ at 4K, a single minute is roughly 1.5 GB, which exceeds the per-file limit before you have imported anything. Transcoding to H.264 before import is a workaround but adds a step.

When the free plan is enough

The free plan works when all of these are true: your monthly source media stays under 60 minutes, you are the only editor, 720p export meets your needs, you do not need timeline export to a professional NLE, and the limited AI credits cover what you want to do.

Good fits include evaluating whether transcript-based editing suits your workflow, producing a one-off short video or audio piece, cleaning up a brief recording, or creating a few social clips from a short source file.

The free plan is best understood as a product trial. It exposes Descript's core interaction model (edit text, media follows) without requiring payment. If the model works for you, the decision becomes which paid tier matches your volume.

When to upgrade

Upgrade when any of these ceilings becomes a constraint:

You produce more than 60 minutes of media per month. Hobbyist, Creator, and Pro increase the allowance substantially.

You need 1080p or 4K export. Hobbyist unlocks 1080p. Creator and Pro unlock 4K.

You rely on AI features regularly. Creator and Pro include more AI credits and access to the full feature set without usage anxiety.

You need more than one editor. Pro supports up to three editors. Business supports larger teams.

You need timeline export to Premiere Pro, Resolve, or Final Cut Pro. This requires a paid plan.

Creator is the first tier suitable for regular production. Ten hours per month covers a weekly podcast, a few YouTube videos, or a moderate content calendar. Pro's 30 hours suits teams with higher volume or multiple editors.

What the free plan does not cover at all

Descript is an editor. It handles the editing step in a content workflow. It does not cover file organisation across a content library, searching past projects by meaning, annotating images or documents alongside video, managing tasks and briefs, or publishing deliverables with analytics.

For the workspace around editing, Fabric handles all of those. AI search finds content by meaning across every file type, including inside video through automatic transcription. Annotations pin feedback to video frames, images, PDFs, and slides. Notes and documents keep scripts and briefs alongside the media. Tasks connect to relevant files. Publishing turns any content into a shareable link with analytics.

Fabric and Descript complement each other. Edit in Descript, organise and find everything in Fabric. Fabric's paid plans start at $8/mo billed yearly, with a free tier.

Frequently asked questions

Does Descript Free add a watermark?

No. Descript's free plan currently exports without a watermark. The constraint is resolution (720p), not branding.

How many minutes do I get on Descript Free?

60 media minutes per month. This covers all imported and recorded media, not just transcribed content. Minutes reset monthly and do not roll over.

Can I import 4K footage on the free plan?

Yes. Descript accepts source files up to 4K resolution on the free plan. However, export is capped at 720p. You can edit 4K source material but the output will be downscaled.

Can I use filler word removal on the free plan?

Yes, within the limited AI credit allowance. Regular use of AI features across multiple projects will exhaust the free credits.

Can I collaborate with someone on Descript Free?

Comments and live collaboration are included, but the plan supports only one editor seat. A collaborator can view and comment but cannot create or manage projects independently.

Does Descript Free support multicam editing?

Multicam editing requires a paid plan. The free plan supports single-track editing.

Can I export from Descript Free to Premiere Pro?

No. Timeline export to professional NLEs (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve) requires a paid plan.

What happens when I run out of media minutes?

You cannot import or record new media until the next billing cycle. Existing projects remain accessible and editable with the media already imported.

Is Descript Free good enough for a podcast?

For a single short episode per month (under 60 minutes of source material), the free plan covers the edit. For a weekly show or a podcast with multiple tracks per episode, you will need Creator or Pro.

Is Fabric free?

Fabric does have a free tier with limited storage and AI. Paid plans start at $8/mo billed yearly.
