What is Slack?

Slack is where a lot of teams do their talking, channels, threads, direct messages, files, approvals. It moves quickly, and staying on top of it is a job in itself: messages to answer, threads to follow, channels to run, people to add and remove, status to keep current. This connection lets Fabric's assistant handle much of that for you, in plain language.

What Fabric's assistant can do with Slack

Once your Slack is connected, Fabric's AI assistant can act on your workspace from plain-language requests.

Find and read. Find a message or a user by email, ID, name, or username, get a conversation and its members, get a message by timestamp or permalink, retrieve thread messages, and get a message's reactions, so you can pull the context you need without scrolling.

Handle messages. Send channel, private channel, and direct messages, edit and delete messages, add reactions and reminders, cancel a scheduled message, and request approval, so responding and following up can be handed off.

Run channels and people. Create and archive channels, create private channels, invite and remove users, set a channel topic, create and edit canvases, and set your status or update your profile, the everyday work of keeping a workspace running.

You describe what you want and the assistant maps it to the right Slack action or trigger.

You stay in control

The assistant acts only when you ask. For anything consequential, sending a message on your behalf, deleting or editing one, removing a user, archiving a channel, it confirms with you before going ahead, unless you've told it not to for a particular task. Finding and reading never post or change anything.

When something should happen regularly, you can set up a Fabric AI job that runs on a schedule, posting a recurring update, inviting new hires to the right channels, so the routine parts run themselves while you keep approval over anything that posts, deletes, or removes.

Search your Slack from Fabric

Alongside the assistant, connecting Slack adds keyword search over your workspace from Fabric's main search, so a message or thread you half-remember is findable by matching text in the same place you search the rest of your library, rather than scrolling back through channels.

How people use it

Team leads hand routine messaging and channel admin to the assistant, posting updates, running channels, keeping status current, so Slack takes less of the day.

Busy people have the assistant find messages and set reminders on the ones that need following up, and draft replies to send.

Operations let workspace activity, a new user, a message matching a query, an approval request, trigger follow-on actions, so onboarding and routing happen without manual steps.

Teams with recurring Slack work set up a scheduled AI job to handle it, while keeping approval over anything that posts, deletes, or removes.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Slack connection do?

It lets Fabric's AI assistant work across your Slack, sending and editing messages, running channels, managing members, and setting status. It also adds keyword search over your workspace in Fabric.

What can the assistant do in Slack?

It can find messages and users, get conversations and threads, send channel, private, and direct messages, edit and delete messages, add reactions and reminders, request approval, create and archive channels, invite and remove users, set channel topics, create and edit canvases, and set status or update a profile. You ask in plain language rather than choosing from a fixed list.

Does the assistant post or delete on its own?

No. It acts only when you ask, and for consequential actions, sending, editing, or deleting messages, removing users, archiving channels, it confirms with you first, unless you've deliberately told it not to for a specific task. Finding and reading post or change nothing.

Can I automate Slack work?

Yes. A Fabric AI job can run on a schedule, for example posting a recurring update or inviting new users to channels, while you keep approval over anything that posts, deletes, or removes.

Can I search my Slack from Fabric?

Yes, by keyword, from Fabric's main search, so a message or thread is findable by matching text alongside the rest of your library.

How is this different from the Discord connection?

Both let the assistant work with your chat platform. The Discord connection is oriented around communities and servers; Slack is oriented around team workplaces, channels, threads, approvals, and status. Choose the one your team talks in.

Will it send or delete messages without asking?

No. Nothing that posts, edits, deletes, or removes happens without your confirmation, unless you've chosen to let a specific task run without it.

Is my Slack data secure?

Everything in Fabric is encrypted in transit and at rest. The connection acts on your workspace with your authorisation, and you control what it does. The details are in the privacy and security guide and Fabric's privacy commitment.

Does this work through MCP or the API?

Fabric also exposes your library and connected tools to external AI through its MCP server and API; this connection is the built-in way to have Fabric's own assistant work with your Slack.

Does Fabric work with other tools alongside Slack?

Yes. Slack is one of many connections. You can also connect Notion, Google Drive, and Gmail, and automate across many apps with Zapier.
