What is Google Sheets?

Google Sheets is where a lot of work lives as rows and columns, trackers, logs, budgets, lists, lightweight databases. Keeping a sheet current is a steady stream of manual entry, and getting something out of one means remembering which sheet, which tab, which row. This connection lets Fabric's assistant read and update your sheets for you, in plain language.

What Fabric's assistant can do with Google Sheets

Once your Google Sheets are connected, Fabric's AI assistant can act on your sheets from plain-language requests.

Find and read data. Find a spreadsheet or worksheet, look up rows, get a row by ID, get a data range or many rows at once, so you can pull what you need without opening the file and scrolling.

Add and update rows. Create a row, several rows, or a row at the top; update a row or many rows; clear or delete rows, so keeping a sheet current becomes something you ask for rather than type.

Build and format. Create spreadsheets and worksheets, add columns, copy ranges and worksheets, sort a range, set data validation, apply conditional formatting or cell and row formatting, rename or change sheet properties, the structural work that usually means clicking through menus.

Because you ask in your own words, you describe the change you want and the assistant maps it to the right operation.

You stay in control

The assistant acts only when you ask. For anything that removes or overwrites data, deleting rows, clearing a range, deleting a worksheet, it confirms with you before going ahead, unless you've told it not to for a particular task. Reading, finding, and looking up rows never change anything in your sheets.

When a job should run regularly, you can set up a Fabric AI job that runs on a schedule, appending entries, updating a tracker, tidying or reformatting a sheet, so the repetitive updates happen on their own while you keep approval over anything that deletes or overwrites.

Search your Sheets from Fabric

Alongside the assistant, connecting Google Sheets adds keyword search over your sheets from Fabric's main search, so a spreadsheet is findable by matching text in the same place you search the rest of your library, rather than digging through Drive for the right file.

How people use it

Operators and analysts keep trackers and logs current by asking the assistant to add or update rows, rather than typing each entry by hand.

Teams have new or changed rows trigger follow-on actions, so a sheet that records something can set the next step in motion automatically.

Anyone who keeps data in Sheets can pull a figure or a set of rows by describing what they want, instead of opening the file and hunting for it.

People with recurring spreadsheet chores set up a scheduled or row-triggered AI job to handle the repetitive updates, while keeping approval over anything destructive.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Google Sheets connection do?

It lets Fabric's AI assistant read and update your Google Sheets, taking actions like creating, updating, clearing, and deleting rows, building and formatting sheets, sorting, and setting validation. It also adds keyword search over your sheets in Fabric.

What can the assistant do in Sheets?

It can find spreadsheets and worksheets, look up and get rows and ranges, create and update rows, clear and delete rows, create spreadsheets and worksheets, add columns, copy ranges, sort, set data validation, apply conditional and cell formatting, and rename or change sheet properties. You ask in plain language rather than choosing from a fixed list.

Does the assistant change my sheets on its own?

No. It acts only when you ask, and for anything that deletes or overwrites data it confirms with you first, unless you've deliberately told it not to for a specific task. Reading and looking up data change nothing.

Can I automate spreadsheet updates?

Yes. A Fabric AI job can run on a schedule, for example appending entries or updating a tracker, while you keep approval over anything destructive.

Can I search my spreadsheets?

Yes, by keyword, from Fabric's main search, so a sheet is findable by matching text alongside the rest of your library.

Will it delete or overwrite rows without asking?

No. Nothing that removes or overwrites data happens without your confirmation, unless you've chosen to let a specific task run without it.

How does this relate to the Google Drive connection?

Your Sheets live in Google Drive, so the two work well together: this connection reads and writes the data inside your spreadsheets, while the Google Drive connection handles your Drive files more broadly. You can use both.

Is my Google Sheets data secure?

Everything in Fabric is encrypted in transit and at rest. The connection acts on your sheets with your authorisation, and you control what it does. The details are in the privacy and security guide and Fabric's privacy commitment.

Does this work through MCP or the API?

Fabric also exposes your library and connected tools to external AI through its MCP server and API; this connection is the built-in way to have Fabric's own assistant work with your Sheets.

Does Fabric work with other tools alongside Google Sheets?

Yes. Google Sheets is one of many connections. You can also connect Google Drive, Notion, and Gmail, and automate across many apps with Zapier.
