Guia passo a passo
Como destacar e fazer anotações em documentos

Working documents collect opinions. A policy draft needs a colleague’s view on one paragraph, meeting notes need a question flagged for the next call, and a spec written in Markdown needs a reminder that section 3 contradicts section 5. Each of those notes belongs next to specific words, and documents in different formats handle that in different ways, or not at all.
This guide covers how people usually mark up documents, the friction that comes with mixing formats, and how to highlight and comment on DOCX, Markdown, TXT, HTML, and JSON files, plus Fabric notes, in one place where the annotations stay with the text.
How people usually annotate documents
Word’s comments and tracked changes are the standard for DOCX files, and they work well inside Word. The comments live in that copy of the file, so a document emailed to three people can come back as three annotated copies that need merging.
Google Docs keeps comments in one shared file, which solves the copies problem for documents written there. Files in other formats, such as a Markdown README or a plain text log, usually have to be converted first, and the converted version then drifts from the original.
For formats with no comment feature at all, people fall back on inline notes like “TODO” or “[check this]” typed into the text, or keep a separate notes file. Inline notes clutter the document and are easy to ship by mistake; separate notes lose their place as the document changes.
Step 1: Bring your documents into Fabric
Drag documents into Fabric, paste them, or click Upload a file. Fabric handles DOCX, TXT, Markdown, HTML, and JSON. Uploading handles large numbers of files at once, so a whole project folder can come across together. Each file keeps its original format, and you can add a comment or tags as you save it.
If you prefer working from Finder or File Explorer, the Fabric desktop app mounts Fabric as a virtual drive on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Save a document into the drive and it’s in Fabric, ready to annotate.
Google Docs and Notion pages come in through connections, which need a paid plan. You can also write directly in Fabric with the notes and docs editor, so drafts and annotations start out in the same place.
Step 2: Highlight the passages that matter
Open the document and select the text you want to mark. Fabric’s annotations offer two modes: a simple highlight for quick reference, or a highlight with a comment when you need to say something about it. The highlight sits on the text itself, so the document stays clean and nothing is typed into its contents.
Highlights work best with a purpose. On a contract template you might highlight every place a client name needs replacing. On meeting notes you might highlight each decision. A consistent habit makes the highlights easy to scan when you come back.
For documents you read rather than write, such as a supplier’s terms, a research brief, or a handbook from a new employer, highlighting as you go also gives you a quick summary of your own reading. Coming back to a 30-page handbook, the six highlighted passages are usually the ones you need.
Step 3: Add comments and jump between them
Add a comment to a highlight to ask a question, record a decision, or note a follow-up. Each comment stays attached to its highlighted passage. Clicking a comment’s location tag takes you straight to that highlight in the document, which saves scrolling through a long spec to find the line a note refers to.
For your own notes, short comments in your own words are the most useful kind. Evergreen notes explains why rewriting an idea in your words helps it stick and connect to others.
Step 4: Annotate documents with your team
Share the document or its folder and choose each person’s role. Fabric’s roles and permissions are viewer, commenter, editor, and admin, set at space and file level. Commenters can highlight text and add comments without changing the document; editors can do both.
Comments thread, so a question and its answer stay together. Any comment can be marked completed, which turns a reviewed document into a checklist. Setting up a collaborative workspace covers how teams arrange shared spaces and roles.
Step 5: Search your documents and act on the notes
Click Search or press Cmd+F (Mac) / Ctrl+F (Windows). Fabric search reads the text inside documents and matches by meaning and by keyword, with quotes for exact phrases. Filters narrow results by tag, location, or kind of item.
When comments call for changes across a document, the AI assistant can edit it directly. Each change is shown with accept and reject, so you review every edit. You can also open a folder of annotated documents and ask the assistant a question; it answers from that folder and cites the files it used.
Answers can be saved as notes, so a question like “what open questions are flagged across these three specs?” can turn into a note you keep beside the documents. Note-taking basics has more on building notes that stay useful.
Frequently asked questions
How do I highlight text in a Word document online?
Upload the DOCX to Fabric, open it, select the text, and highlight it. You can add a comment to any highlight.
Can I annotate Markdown or plain text files?
Yes. Fabric supports highlights and comments on text in Markdown, TXT, HTML, and JSON files as well as DOCX and Fabric notes.
Do highlights change the document’s contents?
No. Highlights and comments sit on top of the text, so nothing is typed into the document itself.
What’s the difference between a highlight and a comment?
A highlight marks a passage for quick reference. A comment adds your note to a highlight, such as a question or a decision, and stays attached to that passage.
Can my team comment on the same document?
Yes. Share it with commenter or editor permission. Comments thread under each highlight, and external people can use shared links without signing up.
How do I find a comment in a long document?
Click the comment’s location tag and Fabric jumps to the highlighted passage it belongs to.
Can I mark a comment as resolved?
Yes. Any comment can be marked completed, so reviewed documents work like a checklist.
Can AI apply the changes my comments ask for?
The AI assistant can edit documents directly, and you accept or reject each change it makes.
Can I annotate Google Docs in Fabric?
Google Docs come into Fabric through the Google Drive connection, which needs a paid plan. See pricing for plan details.
