Science and Tradition in the Scientific Revolution
offline

The Scientific Revolution was not a straightforward battle between science and traditional beliefs, but rather a gradual evolution where existing ideas actively shaped new discoveries (Henry, 2008).

Most early scientists, including Isaac Newton and Johannes Kepler, were deeply religious individuals who viewed their empirical work as a way to better understand God's orderly creation (Principe, 2011). Rather than completely dismantling tradition, early modern science grew directly out of medieval university curricula and traditional systems like Aristotelian logic (Grant, 1996). Furthermore, famous conflicts—such as Galileo's trial—were driven as much by personal rivalries, political pressures, and incomplete scientific evidence as they were by genuine religious disagreement (Biagioli, 1993).

To conclude, the Scientific Revolution was not a war against traditional beliefs, but a complex process of reinterpreting and refining them to lay the groundwork for modern science.
