Badminton Lesson 1 Reviewer

1. Core Definition

  • Sport: A fast-paced racket sport using light rackets to hit a feathered or synthetic shuttlecock back and forth over a net.

  • Players: Played as singles (one opposing player) or doubles (two pairs).

  • Objective: Hit the shuttlecock over the net so it lands within the opponent's court boundaries.

2. Scoring System

  • Match Format: Best of 3 games.

  • Standard Game: Played to 21 points using rally scoring (a point is awarded on every serve/rally).

  • Winning: You must win by at least 2 clear points.

  • Caps: If the score reaches 20-all, play continues until a 2-point lead is established. The absolute maximum cap is 30 points (if it reaches 29-all, the first to 30 wins).

3. Serving Rules

  • Even Score (0, 2, 4...): Serve from the right side.

  • Odd Score (1, 3, 5...): Serve from the left side.

  • Switching: If the server wins the rally, they score a point and serve again from the alternate side. If the receiver wins the rally, they score a point and take over the serve.

4. Court Boundaries

  • Singles Court: Uses narrow court lines (inner side lines) and outer back boundary lines.

  • Doubles Court: Uses wide court lines (outermost side lines) and outer back boundary lines.

  • Dimensions: 13.4m x 5.18m for singles; 13.4m x 6.1m for doubles.

  • Net Height: 1.55m at the posts, 1.524m at the center.

5. Key Faults (Violations)

  • Out of Bounds: Hitting the shuttlecock outside the defined boundaries.

  • Net Touches: Any part of your body, clothing, or racket touching the net while the shuttle is in play.

  • Double Hit: Hitting the shuttlecock twice in succession, or hitting it with your partner before it crosses the net.

  • Obstruction: Reaching over the net to strike the shuttlecock before it crosses to your side.

  • Carrying: Catching, holding, or resting the shuttle on the racket before hitting it.
