Key Terms

Paleolithic cave art

Drawings found deep inside limestone caves, dating back over 30,000 years. The oldest known examples were discovered in Chauvet cave in southern France in 1994. Artists carried torches and stone lamps, and likely used darkness itself as a tool for inner mental exploration.

Shaman

A healer within a community who is particularly skilled at accessing altered states of mind. These states serve as sources of knowledge and power used in service of others. Shamans are believed to communicate with animals, plants, and nature in ways outside the framework of contemporary science. Respected globally, though many traditions have been lost in modern societies.

Hominin

A human-like animal. The term covers the lineage of species considered direct human ancestors, spanning roughly 5 to 6 million years.

Hominin genera

Three primary groups for classifying hominin fossils: Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, and Homo.

Conspecific

A member of the same species. The killing of conspecifics is a recurring theme in human evolution and behaviour.

Mind

A collection of mental states, including thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. Closely tied to the concept of consciousness.

Consciousness

The capacity to be aware of one's own mental experiences and states. Defined by the subjective, first-person quality of experience ("what is it like to be?").

Mind-body problem

A philosophical problem about the relationship between the mind and the body. It arises when mind and body are considered fundamentally different in nature. The question is not simply how they interact, but what their relationship is at all.

Physicalism

The position that the mind is determined (somehow) by physiological processes in the brain and body.

Physical materialism

The view that everything can be explained in purely physical terms: molecules interacting and producing energy according to mathematical laws.

Reductionism

The approach of understanding a larger system by breaking it down into its component parts. In this course, the chain runs: physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, mind/consciousness.

Worldview (metaphysical framework)

The broader conceptual stage on which we perform our analysis of how mind relates to physical processes in the body.

Paleolithic Cave Art and Inner Experience

  • Chauvet cave in southern France, discovered 1994, contains drawings more than 30,000 years old

  • Drawings found far from cave entrances and natural light

    • Artists used torches, stone lamps, and small fires to see

    • Darkness was also used deliberately as an aid to inner exploration

    • Tools carved from bone were used to carve into cave walls

  • "To hallucinate" derives from the idea of wandering in the mind

  • The absence of compelling visual stimuli allows the mind to wander into its own internal experience

  • Cave art depicts animals and fusions of animal-human forms, possibly representing shamanic connections with animals

Shamanic Traditions

  • Shamans are individuals skilled at accessing altered states of mind for the benefit of their community

  • These traditions exist across the world but have been largely lost in modern society, often dismissed as primitive or inconsistent with science

  • Shamans also use darkness as an aid to altered states

2001: A Space Odyssey and Human Violence

  • Directed by Stanley Kubrick (1968), co-written with Arthur C. Clarke

  • Depicts early hominins discovering that bones can serve as tools and weapons

  • The scene where a hominin kills a conspecific with a bone tool is presented as potentially the first intentional killing in human history

  • Highlights a core theme: the connection between brain, intelligence, and our capacity for violence

Clarke's Three Laws

  • When a distinguished but elderly scientist says something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he says something is impossible, he is probably wrong.

  • The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

  • Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Hominin Evolution Timeline

  • Oldest direct human ancestor fossils: 5–6 million years old

  • Ardipithecus ramidus: ~4.4 million years ago

  • Australopithecus

    • Afarensis: 3–4 million years ago

    • Africanus: 2–3 million years ago

    • Robustus: 1–2.5 million years ago

  • Homo

    • Habilis: 1.4–2.3 million years ago

    • Erectus: 200,000–1.9 million years ago

    • Neanderthalensis: 30,000–300,000 years ago

    • Sapiens: 200,000 years ago to present

Evolution of Brain Size

  • Substantial increase over several million years, with rapid expansion in the last 2 million years

  • Brain size by species:

    • Ardipithecus ramidus: ~350 cc

    • Australopithecus africanus: ~500 cc

    • Homo habilis: ~650 cc

    • Homo sapiens: ~1,400 cc

  • Accompanying the expansion: tool use, nuanced social interaction, language, mathematical skill, complex problem-solving, and the capacity to build explanatory frameworks

Violence and Compassion

  • Our capacity for violence is linked to sophisticated intelligence and physical/mathematical reasoning combined with primal fear

  • Equally, we have tremendous capacity for kindness, trust, love, and compassion

  • The consistency of European Paleolithic cave paintings over 20,000+ years suggests stable, relatively peaceful cultures existed for thousands of years

Mind, Consciousness, and the Mind-Body Problem

  • Mind: a collection of mental states (thoughts, feelings, perceptions)

  • Consciousness: the capacity to be aware of those states

  • The "what is it like to be?" question captures the subjective, first-person nature of experience

  • The mind-body problem asks about the relationship between mind and body, arising from the premise that they may be fundamentally different in nature

  • HAL from 2001: asking whether HAL has a mind is asking whether there is an experience of "what it is like to be HAL"

Physicalism, Reductionism, and Worldview

  • Physicalism holds that the mind is determined by brain and body physiology

  • Physical materialism explains everything through molecules and energy governed by mathematical laws

  • Reductionism: understanding a system by studying its components

  • The reductionist chain in this course: physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, mind/consciousness

  • Worldview or metaphysical framework is the conceptual stage on which these analyses are performed

Astronomical Observation and Modern Science

  • Modern science is grounded in astronomy

  • Stonehenge (~4,500 years ago) as an example of early sophisticated thought

  • Astronomy and astrophysics are among the oldest sciences


Why It Matters / Exam Flags

⚠️ Know the hominin genera (Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, Homo) and approximate brain sizes for each.

⚠️ Be clear on the distinction between mind and consciousness, and why they are "almost interchangeable" but not identical.

⚠️ The mind-body problem is not about how mind and body causally interact. That framing presupposes interactionism.

⚠️ Know Clarke's three laws by number.

⚠️ Understand physicalism vs. physical materialism vs. reductionism as distinct but related concepts.
