TL;DR

This section tests conceptual understanding of cost accounting versus financial accounting. You evaluate six statements as true (1) or false (0). The topics range from the purpose of internal vs. external accounting, to the treatment of kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn, to the definition of Einnahmen. These are knowledge questions, not calculation questions.

Key Terms

Internes Rechnungswesen (internal accounting / management accounting)

Accounting directed inward, towards management decision-making. Includes Kosten- und Erlösrechnung (cost and revenue accounting). It is not legally mandated and uses betriebswirtschaftliche Größen (operating figures) rather than strictly legal definitions.

Externes Rechnungswesen (external accounting / financial accounting)

Accounting directed outward, towards stakeholders (investors, tax authorities, creditors). Includes Finanzbuchhaltung, Jahresabschluss, Bilanz. It follows legal requirements (HGB, IFRS) and focuses on the financial relationships of the firm with its environment.

Kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn (imputed entrepreneur's salary)

A cost recognised in the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung to reflect the opportunity cost of the owner-manager's labour, even though no actual payment is made. It is an Zusatzkosten (additional cost) with no corresponding Aufwand in the Finanzbuchhaltung.

Einnahmen (revenue inflows)

In accounting terminology, Einnahmen are increases in monetary assets (Geldvermögen) from the sale of goods or services. They relate to the period's Güterabgänge (outflows of goods) but are not necessarily tied to the same period's cash receipts.

Betriebsergebnis (operating result)

The profit or loss calculated within the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung, distinct from the Jahresüberschuss of financial accounting.

Core Content

Statement (a) – TRUE (1)

"Im internen Rechnungswesen wird der Erfolg der Unternehmung durch Systematisierung und Gegenüberstellung von tagesnah bewerteten Input- und Outputgrößen dokumentiert."

This is correct. The KoRe matches costs (inputs) against revenues (outputs) using current, operationally relevant valuations, not historical-cost figures from the Finanzbuchhaltung. "Tagesnah bewertet" (valued close to the date of use) is a characteristic of internal accounting.

Statement (b) – TRUE (1)

"Aufgabe des externen Rechnungswesens ist u.a. die Abbildung der finanziellen Beziehungen des Unternehmens zu seiner Umwelt."

This is correct. The primary function of external accounting is to document and report the firm's financial relationships with external parties: creditors, shareholders, tax authorities, and the public.

Statement (c) – FALSE (0)

"Der kalkulatorische Unternehmerlohn wird nur in der Finanzbuchhaltung, nicht jedoch in der Kosten- und Erlösrechnung zur Berechnung des Unternehmenserfolgs herangezogen."

This is backwards. The kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn is recognised only in the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung (as an Zusatzkosten), not in the Finanzbuchhaltung. In financial accounting, there is no expense for the owner-manager's own labour in a sole proprietorship or partnership.

Statement (d) – TRUE (1)

"Zweck der Kosten- und Erlösrechnung ist u.a. die Unterstützung bei der bilanziellen Bewertung von selbst hergestellten Teilen."

This is correct. One purpose of KoRe is to determine Herstellungskosten for internally produced goods, which feeds into inventory valuation on the balance sheet (Bilanz). This is the interface between internal and external accounting.

Statement (e) – TRUE (1)

"Aufgabe der Kosten- und Erlösrechnung ist sowohl die Bereitstellung von Unterlagen für Entscheidungsrechnungen als auch die Kontrolle der Wirtschaftlichkeit."

This is correct. KoRe serves two core purposes: providing data for management decisions (make-or-buy, pricing, product mix) and monitoring efficiency (Soll-Ist-Vergleich, variance analysis).

Statement (f) – FALSE (0)

"Einnahmen sind die mit Güterabgängen der Periode verbundenen Zahlungszuflüsse beliebiger Perioden."

This is false. The statement confuses Einnahmen with Einzahlungen. Einnahmen are increases in Geldvermögen (monetary wealth, which includes receivables), not necessarily cash inflows (Zahlungszuflüsse). A sale on credit creates Einnahmen in the current period (receivable arises) even though the Zahlungszufluss occurs later. The definition given in the statement incorrectly ties Einnahmen to cash movements across any period.

Formulas / Diagrams

Begriffshierarchie (hierarchy of financial terms):

  • Einzahlungen: actual cash inflows

  • Einnahmen: increases in Geldvermögen (cash + receivables – payables)

  • Ertrag: increases in Reinvermögen (total net assets), period-based

  • Erlöse (Leistungen): betriebszweckbezogene Erträge, the subset of Ertrag relevant to the firm's core operations

Each term is progressively broader. Exam questions often test whether you can distinguish between them.

Why It Matters / Exam Flags

⚠️ Statement (c) is the classic reversal trick. The kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn exists only in KoRe, never in the Finanzbuchhaltung. If you see "nur in der Finanzbuchhaltung" for any kalkulatorische Kosten, the answer is false.

⚠️ Statement (f) tests the difference between Einnahmen and Einzahlungen. Einnahmen ≠ cash. This distinction (Einzahlung, Einnahme, Ertrag, Erlös) is one of the most commonly examined conceptual chains in KoRe.

⚠️ For true/false sections, read every word. The examiners often change a single term (e.g. "Finanzbuchhaltung" instead of "Kosten- und Erlösrechnung") to flip an otherwise correct statement.

⚠️ Scoring: 1 point per correct answer, 0 for incorrect. No negative marking mentioned, so guessing carries no penalty.

Practice Q&A

Q: Where does the kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn appear: in the Finanzbuchhaltung, the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung, or both?

A: Only in the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung. It is an Zusatzkosten with no matching Aufwand in financial accounting.

Q: What is the difference between Einnahmen and Einzahlungen?

A: Einzahlungen are actual cash receipts. Einnahmen are increases in Geldvermögen, which includes not just cash but also the creation of receivables (Forderungen). A credit sale is an Einnahme but not an Einzahlung until the customer pays.

Q: Name two purposes of the Kosten- und Erlösrechnung.

A: Providing decision-support data (Entscheidungsrechnungen) and controlling operational efficiency (Wirtschaftlichkeitskontrolle). A third is supporting inventory valuation for the balance sheet.

Q: What does "tagesnah bewertet" mean in the context of internal accounting?

A: It means inputs and outputs are valued at prices close to the date of actual consumption or production, rather than at historical acquisition cost. This gives management a more current picture of profitability.
