TL;DR

Given cost data from a sparkling wine brand ("Schwarzkäppchen"), you calculate Herstellkosten der Produktion, Selbstkosten der abgesetzten Produkte, and the Betriebsergebnis using the Umsatzkostenverfahren. The key challenge is correctly handling inventory changes for both unfertige (work-in-progress) and fertige (finished) Erzeugnisse to arrive at the cost of goods sold.

Key Terms

Umsatzkostenverfahren (UKV, cost of sales method)

A method for computing the Betriebsergebnis that matches only the costs of goods actually sold against revenue, rather than showing all period costs. Inventory changes adjust the Herstellkosten der Produktion to arrive at Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte.

Herstellkosten der Produktion (HK Produktion, manufacturing cost of production)

All costs incurred in producing output during the period: Materialkosten (Fertigung) + Personalkosten (Fertigung) + Abschreibungen (Fertigung) + Sonstige Kosten (if production-related). This figure reflects what was produced, not what was sold.

Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte (HK Absatz, manufacturing cost of goods sold)

The manufacturing cost attributable to products actually sold. Calculated by adjusting HK Produktion for changes in WIP and finished goods inventories.

Selbstkosten der abgesetzten Produkte (full cost of goods sold)

Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte plus Verwaltungs- und Vertriebskosten. This is the total cost matched against revenue.

Bestandsveränderung (inventory change)

The difference between opening and closing stock. An increase in inventory (Endbestand > Anfangsbestand) means some production was not sold, reducing the cost charged against revenue. A decrease means more was sold than produced, increasing the cost.

Unfertige Erzeugnisse (work in progress, WIP)

Partially completed goods. Anfangsbestand: €32,000; Endbestand: €30,000. Bestandsveränderung: –€2,000 (decrease, meaning more moved to finished stage than entered WIP).

Fertige Erzeugnisse (finished goods)

Completed goods awaiting sale. Anfangsbestand: €38,500; Endbestand: €44,000. Bestandsveränderung: +€5,500 (increase, meaning not all finished production was sold).

Sonstige Kosten are fully assigned to Vertrieb (per the Hinweis in the exam).

Step 1: Herstellkosten der Produktion (D/1)

These include only production-related costs:

  • Materialkosten (Fertigung): €63,000

  • Personalkosten (Fertigung): €44,000

  • Abschreibungen (Fertigung): €59,000

HK Produktion = 63,000 + 44,000 + 59,000 = €166,000

Answer D/1: 166 T€

Step 2: Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte

Adjust for inventory changes:

Bestandsveränderung unfertige Erzeugnisse:

Endbestand – Anfangsbestand = 30,000 – 32,000 = –2,000

(Bestand decreased by €2,000, meaning €2,000 more left WIP than entered it, so more cost flows forward.)

Bestandsveränderung fertige Erzeugnisse:

Endbestand – Anfangsbestand = 44,000 – 38,500 = +5,500

(Bestand increased by €5,500, meaning €5,500 of finished production went into stock rather than being sold.)

HK abgesetzt = HK Produktion – Bestandserhöhung UE + Bestandsminderung UE – Bestandserhöhung FE + Bestandsminderung FE

More directly:

HK abgesetzt = HK Produktion – (Veränderung UE) – (Veränderung FE)

= 166,000 – (–2,000) – (5,500)

= 166,000 + 2,000 – 5,500

= €162,500

Alternatively, think of it this way:

  • WIP decreased → more product completed than started, adding to available finished goods → add the decrease to costs flowing through

  • Finished goods increased → some completed product went to stock instead of being sold → subtract the increase from costs of goods sold

Step 3: Selbstkosten der abgesetzten Produkte (D/2)

Add Verwaltungs- und Vertriebskosten:

  • Personalkosten V&V: €32,000

  • Abschreibungen V&V: €26,000

  • Sonstige Kosten (Vertrieb): €8,500

V&V Kosten = 32,000 + 26,000 + 8,500 = €66,500

Selbstkosten = HK abgesetzt + V&V Kosten = 162,500 + 66,500 = €229,000

Answer D/2: 229 T€

Step 4: Betriebsergebnis (D/3)

Betriebsergebnis = Netto-Verkaufserlöse – Selbstkosten

= 236,000 – 229,000

= €7,000

Answer D/3: 7 T€ (Gewinn / profit)

Formulas / Diagrams

Umsatzkostenverfahren schema:

  Materialkosten (Fertigung)
+ Personalkosten (Fertigung)
+ Abschreibungen (Fertigung)
= Herstellkosten der Produktion
+ Bestandsminderung unfertige Erzeugnisse (or – Bestandserhöhung)
– Bestandserhöhung fertige Erzeugnisse (or + Bestandsminderung)
= Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte
+ Verwaltungs- und Vertriebskosten
= Selbstkosten der abgesetzten Produkte

  Netto-Verkaufserlöse
– Selbstkosten der abgesetzten Produkte
= Betriebsergebnis

Bestandsveränderung rule of thumb:

  • Inventory increase → cost stays in stock → reduces cost of goods sold

  • Inventory decrease → cost leaves stock → increases cost of goods sold

Why It Matters / Exam Flags

⚠️ The direction of inventory adjustments is the most common source of errors. Practise until the logic is automatic: stock goes up, less was sold than produced, so subtract from costs. Stock goes down, more was sold than produced, so add to costs.

⚠️ Sonstige Kosten (€8,500) are stated as belonging entirely to Vertrieb. Include them in V&V costs, not in Herstellkosten. Missing this changes two answers (D/1 and D/2).

⚠️ There are two inventory adjustments (UE and FE), not one. Both must be applied. In this exam, they partially offset each other (–2,000 vs. +5,500), but the net effect is –3,500 (reducing HK abgesetzt relative to HK Produktion).

⚠️ Answers are in T€ (thousands of euros, rounded). €166,000 → 166 T€. Double-check that you have not accidentally reported the figure in full euros when thousands are required.

⚠️ The Umsatzkostenverfahren is distinct from the Gesamtkostenverfahren. The UKV does not show Bestandsveränderungen as a line item on the revenue side; instead, it adjusts the cost side. Make sure you know which method the exam asks for.

Practice Q&A

Q: What costs are included in Herstellkosten der Produktion?

A: Only production-related costs: Fertigungsmaterial, Fertigungslöhne (Personalkosten Fertigung), and Fertigungsabschreibungen. Verwaltungs-, Vertriebs-, and sonstige Kosten are excluded.

Q: Unfertige Erzeugnisse had an Anfangsbestand of €32,000 and an Endbestand of €30,000. How does this affect Herstellkosten der abgesetzten Produkte?

A: The WIP stock decreased by €2,000. This means €2,000 more in cost flowed out of WIP into finished goods and onward to sales. HK abgesetzt increases by €2,000 relative to HK Produktion.

Q: Fertige Erzeugnisse increased from €38,500 to €44,000. What does this mean for the UKV?

A: An increase of €5,500 went into finished goods stock and was not sold. HK abgesetzt decreases by €5,500 relative to the cost available from production plus WIP adjustments.

Q: What is the difference between the Umsatzkostenverfahren and the Gesamtkostenverfahren?

A: The UKV matches costs of goods sold against revenue (adjusts the cost side for inventory changes). The GKV shows all period costs on the cost side and adds Bestandsveränderungen to the revenue side as a correction. Both yield the same Betriebsergebnis.

Q: If Netto-Verkaufserlöse are €236,000 and Selbstkosten are €229,000, what is the Betriebsergebnis?

A: €236,000 – €229,000 = €7,000 (profit).
