Your Fabric cloud on your laptop. Takes zero disk space.

### What is Fabric Desktop?

Your entire Fabric library, mounted as a drive on your computer. Every file, every folder, every space, accessible from Finder or Explorer. Takes zero disk space.

Files stream in real-time when you open them. No downloading your whole library. No waiting. No "storage full" notifications. Even large video files open instantly, because Fabric streams what you need the moment you need it.

This is not a sync folder. This is your personal cloud, behaving like a local drive.

### What you get with Fabric Desktop

Most cloud storage forces a choice: download everything and fill your hard drive, or leave it online and wait every time you need something. Fabric Desktop removes that choice. Your full library appears as a drive on your computer, but nothing takes up space until you open it. Files stream on demand, like music from Spotify.

Choose specific folders to keep available offline for when you need them without a connection. Everything else streams. Your 500GB library sits on a laptop with 128GB free, and it just works.

Edit any file in any app. Open a Fabric file in Photoshop, Premiere, Figma, VS Code, or anything else. Changes save back to Fabric automatically and appear on your other devices.

### Everything is searchable and connected

This is what separates Fabric from a mounted drive. Every file in your library is read and understood by the AI, then connected to the rest of your knowledge. A spec you saved sits next to the notes you took about it and the article you clipped on the same subject, because Fabric [maps the relationships](https://fabric.so/features/search) between everything you save.

Find files by meaning, not filename. Describe what a document was about and [semantic search](https://fabric.so/features/search) surfaces it, even if you forgot the name or where you put it. Point the [AI assistant](https://fabric.so/features/ai-assistant) at a file or a whole folder and ask it to summarise, compare, or draft from what is there.

### Your files, on every device

Your library is not stuck on the machine you saved it from. It is in the Fabric app on your phone, your tablet, and the web, always current. Start something on your laptop, continue on your phone, finish on your tablet. The same file, the latest version, everywhere.

Back up your phone's photos, documents, and files automatically. Everything joins the same searchable library.

### How people use it

**Designers** mount their full asset library as a drive. Client files, exports, references, and drafts appear alongside moodboards and notes in Fabric, searchable by meaning. Open a PSD from the drive in Photoshop, edit it, and the change syncs everywhere.

**Agencies** give their team one shared drive with every client project accessible instantly. No version confusion. No email attachments. No "which folder was that in?" Beautiful [client sharing](https://fabric.so/features/publish) built in.

**Researchers** keep papers, datasets, and figures in their library and access them from any device. Months of collected material, searchable by concept, connected to annotations and reading notes. Fits a longer [research workflow](https://fabric.so/learn/research-workflow).

**Students** keep their entire course library in Fabric. Lecture slides, textbook chapters, notes, recordings, all findable in one place and available on their phone before class. Part of a wider [study system](https://fabric.so/learn/student-study-system).

**Video editors** stream large project files directly from Fabric without downloading them first. A 2GB video file opens instantly. No external hard drives. No waiting.

**Freelancers** keep every client's files in separate spaces, all mounted as one drive. Switch between client projects without switching apps. Everything backed up, everything searchable, everything shareable.

The longer you use it, the more it holds. As more files flow into Fabric, the library [builds a richer map](https://fabric.so/features/search) of how your work connects, so what you can find and surface grows with what you put in.

### Frequently asked questions

**What is Fabric Desktop?**
It mounts your entire Fabric library as a drive on your computer. Every file and folder appears in Finder or Explorer, takes zero disk space, and streams in real-time when you open it. It is the simplest way to access everything in Fabric from your desktop.

**Does it take up disk space?**
No. Files stream on demand and are not stored locally unless you choose to sync specific folders for offline access. Your full library appears as a drive without using local storage.

**Can I open files in other apps?**
Yes. Open any file from the Fabric drive in Photoshop, Premiere, VS Code, Word, or any other app. Edit it normally. Changes save back to Fabric and sync to your other devices automatically.

**How is this different from the old desktop folder sync?**
The old version created a single Fabric folder on your computer that synced both ways. Fabric Desktop mounts your entire library as a drive, takes zero disk space, and streams files on demand. It is a full replacement, not just a sync folder.

**Can I search inside files on the drive?**
Yes. Fabric reads the contents of your files, so you can find them by meaning with [semantic search](https://fabric.so/features/search), not just by filename, alongside everything else in your library.

**Are my files available on my phone and tablet?**
Yes. Your library is on every device. Files you access on your computer are available in the Fabric app on your phone, tablet, and the web, with your latest changes.

**Can I choose what to keep offline?**
Yes. Pin specific folders for offline access. Everything else streams when you need it. You control what lives locally and what stays in the cloud.

**Can the AI assistant work with files on the drive?**
Yes. Every file in your library is readable by the [AI assistant](https://fabric.so/features/ai-assistant). Summarise a document, compare files, ask questions about a whole folder.

**Is my data secure?**
Everything in Fabric is encrypted in transit and at rest, with AES-256 encryption on stored files. Details are in the [privacy and security guide](https://fabric.so/guide/privacy-and-security/basics) and Fabric's [privacy commitment](https://fabric.so/info/privacy).

**How is this different from Dropbox or Google Drive?**
Dropbox and Google Drive sync files between your computer and their cloud. Fabric Desktop mounts your library as a streaming drive that takes zero disk space, and every file is searchable by meaning with AI. You can still connect [Dropbox](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/dropbox/ozUGYV4C) and [Google Drive](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/google-drive/x52cHqan) to Fabric and search across all of them together.

**Does Fabric work with other tools alongside this?**
Yes. Fabric Desktop is one of many [connections](https://fabric.so/connections). You can also bring in [Google Drive](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/google-drive/x52cHqan), [Dropbox](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/dropbox/ozUGYV4C), [Notion](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/notion/S7HtdFtL), and [Gmail](https://fabric.so/marketplace/connections/gmail/5zZcTVqZ), and search across them all at once.

Sync your iOS photos and files to Fabric.

### What is iOS device sync?

Your phone is where most of what you capture ends up: photos, screenshots, documents, downloads, the receipt you snapped, the chart someone shared, the file a colleague sent. It all piles into one place, sorted by date, and becomes impossible to scroll back through. iOS device sync brings your photos and files from your iPhone into Fabric, where they're read, understood, and made findable by the text and content inside them. You choose what syncs, so you can bring in everything or just what matters.

Screenshots are the sharpest example of the problem. You take one, a wifi password, a confirmation number, a post you wanted to keep, and it vanishes into a camera roll of thousands. But it's the same for the photo you took of a whiteboard, the PDF you saved, or the picture with the detail you now need. Device sync makes all of it findable.

### What you get when you connect iOS device sync

Connecting your iPhone means the things you capture stop disappearing the moment you take them. Your photos and files sync into Fabric, get read by the AI, and become part of your searchable library, available not just on your phone but on your tablet and the web too. The photo you took last spring, or the file you saved months ago, is findable from your laptop today.

You stay in control of what comes in. Sync your whole camera roll and files and let them flow in automatically, or choose the ones worth keeping. Either way, what arrives in Fabric is searchable by its contents from the moment it lands.

### Search your iPhone photos and files by text and content

Fabric reads the text inside your images, recognises what a photo shows, and reads the contents of your documents, so you can search your phone by what things contain rather than by date or filename. Describe what you need, "the screenshot with the wifi password," "that bar chart from the deck," "the photo of the whiteboard," "the address someone sent me," and [semantic search](https://fabric.so/features/search) surfaces it, with no tags or labels to add first. The Photos app sorts by date and reads little of what an image holds; the Files app finds things only by name.

Because your photos and files share a library with everything else you save, they also connect outward. The screenshot of a quote sits near the article you clipped and the note you wrote on the same idea, since Fabric [maps the relationships](https://fabric.so/features/search) across everything you keep. You can point the [AI assistant](https://fabric.so/features/ai-assistant) at your synced content too, and ask it to pull the detail you need out of an image or document, or gather the ones related to something you're working on.

### When you want to use what's synced, copy it out

Your synced photos and files are there to find and reference; the originals stay on your iPhone. When you want to do something with one inside Fabric, build on it, add it to a project, work from the text in it, you copy it into your library. The copy is yours to use however you like, while the original stays untouched on your phone.

### How people use it

**Designers** sync screenshots and photos of interfaces, type, and colour they like, so a visual reference turns up when they describe it, instead of being lost among everything else on their phone. It pairs with how Fabric works for [designers](https://fabric.so/for/designers).

**Researchers and students** bring in photos of slides, passages, and figures, and the documents they save on the go, so everything's searchable alongside their reading and notes, as part of a wider [study system](https://fabric.so/learn/student-study-system).

**Anyone running their life off their phone** syncs receipts, confirmations, passwords, addresses, and the files that land there, and relies on Fabric to surface the right one by what's in it when they need it.

**Content creators** save posts, captions, references, and shots as photos and screenshots, and find them again by describing what they showed, rather than hunting the camera roll.

The longer you use it, the more it holds. As more of your phone's photos and files flow in and join the rest of your library, Fabric [builds a richer map](https://fabric.so/features/search) of how everything you capture relates, so what surfaces grows with what you save.

### Frequently asked questions

**What does the iOS device sync connection do?**

It syncs the photos and files from your iPhone into Fabric, where they're read by the AI and made searchable by their contents. You can find any photo or file by the text or thing inside it, and reach it from all your devices, rather than scrolling your phone.

**Can I search my photos and files by what's in them?**

Yes. Fabric reads the text in an image, what it depicts, and the contents of your documents, so you can find something with [semantic search](https://fabric.so/features/search) by describing it, without having labelled anything.

**Does everything sync, or can I choose?**

Your choice. You can sync your whole camera roll and files automatically, or pick what you want to bring into Fabric.

**Can I edit synced photos and files inside Fabric?**

The synced items are read-only in Fabric, and the originals stay on your iPhone. When you want to work with one, you copy it into your library, and the copy is yours to use and build on however you like.

**Does connecting this change or delete anything on my phone?**

No. Your photos and files stay on your iPhone exactly as they are. Fabric brings in a synced, searchable copy and never alters or removes anything on your device.

**Are my synced photos and files available on my other devices?**

Yes. Once synced, they live in your Fabric library, which is on every device, so they're on your tablet and the web as well as your phone, with search that works the same everywhere.
