How to turn voice memos into notes

Talking is often the fastest way to get a thought out. A plan for the weekend while walking the dog, a half-formed idea for a talk recorded in the car, a list of things to tell the builder: they all make sense spoken aloud. Played back a week later, the same memo is four minutes of “so, um, the other thing is”, and the useful part is buried somewhere in the middle.
A transcript is a start, though reading one back can take almost as long as listening. This page covers how people usually get from a recording to something they can read and act on, and how Fabric turns a voice note into a written-up note when you stop recording, with the AI assistant on hand to reshape it.
How people usually turn voice memos into notes
Many people record in their phone’s built-in app. Recent versions of iPhone’s Voice Memos can show a transcript, and Google’s Recorder app on Pixel phones does the same. That gets the words onto the screen. Turning them into a note still means reading through, picking out the points, and typing them somewhere else, often a notes app that has no link back to the recording.
Others use a transcription tool such as Otter, then paste the transcript into ChatGPT and ask it to tidy things up. The result can be good. It takes three apps and some copying, and the tidy version ends up in a chat history while the original audio stays in another account.
And plenty of memos never get processed at all. They sit in a list of files named “New Recording 47”, which is a fair reflection of how much effort the cleanup step takes when it’s manual.
Step 1: Start a voice note in Fabric
You can start a voice or meeting note manually in any Fabric app: web, desktop, iOS, or Android. On the go, the phone is the obvious choice, and the apps are on the mobile download page. Start the note and talk as you would into any recorder.
Recording voice notes with transcription needs a paid plan; transcription isn’t included on the free plan. The pricing page compares plans.
Step 2: Type alongside the recording if it helps
Voice notes in Fabric can carry written notes too. You can jot a few headings before you start talking, such as “budget”, “dates”, “questions for the builder”, and add to them while you record. This is optional, but a handful of typed words gives the write-up a structure that matches how you were thinking.
It also suits recordings where you’re reacting to something, like talking through a draft you’re reading or a site you’re walking around. Type the name of each thing as you reach it and speak your thoughts about it.
Step 3: Stop recording and read the write-up
When you stop, Fabric analyzes the transcript and any notes you typed together, and produces a write-up of the recording. You get a readable note built from what you said, which is quicker to read than the recording is to play back.
The note is a full document in the Fabric editor, so you can edit it, add to it, or move it into a project folder. Fabric also suggests tags and extracts topics, which smart collections you’ve set up can use to gather related notes, for example every voice note about the house renovation.
Step 4: Reshape the note with the AI assistant
The write-up may not be the final form you need. Open the AI assistant and ask it to turn the note into an outline for a talk, a short email to the builder, or a list of next steps. The assistant can edit documents directly, with an accept or reject option on each change, so you can apply the edits you like and leave the rest.
Answers can also be saved as separate notes, which keeps the original write-up intact. How to turn voice notes into a to-do list goes into the to-do version of this in more detail.
Step 5: Bring in older memos and find any of them later
Recordings you made before using Fabric can come in too. Uploaded audio in MP3, WAV, or M4A is transcribed on a paid plan, and on a phone you can share a memo straight from your recorder app to Fabric. Once transcribed, open the assistant on that recording and ask for the same kind of note: a summary, an outline, or a list.
Every transcript is searchable. Press Cmd+F (Mac) / Ctrl+F (Windows) and search for what you remember saying, and results jump to the timestamp. How to keep notes by talking instead of typing covers building a daily habit around this, and how to capture ideas by voice covers idea capture in particular.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a voice memo to a written note?
Record it as a voice note in Fabric and a write-up is produced when you stop. For an existing memo, upload or share the file to Fabric, then ask the AI assistant to write it up.
What’s the difference between a transcript and a write-up?
A transcript is every word as spoken. The write-up is a note Fabric produces from the transcript and any notes you typed, organized for reading.
Can I record a voice note on my phone and read it on my laptop?
Yes. Voice notes can be started in any Fabric app, and everything syncs across web, desktop, iOS, and Android.
Do voice notes in Fabric need a paid plan?
Yes. Recording voice notes with transcription needs a paid plan. Typed notes are available on the free plan.
Can AI turn my voice memo into a to-do list?
Yes. Ask the AI assistant to pull out the action items from the note or transcript, then save the answer as a note or let the assistant edit the document.
Can I edit the note Fabric writes up?
Yes. The write-up is a regular Fabric document, and the transcript can be edited as well.
Can I use Fabric voice notes for in-person conversations?
Yes. Start a voice or meeting note manually for an in-person meeting, a lecture, or a conversation, and the same write-up happens when you stop.
Can I ask questions about what I said across several voice notes?
Yes. Put the notes in one folder and open the AI assistant there. It answers from everything in the folder and cites timestamps in the recordings it used.
How do I find something I said in an old voice memo?
Search for it. Transcribed audio is covered by Fabric search, and results open at the timestamp where you said it.
